Robert McDERMOTT. Private 830179, 3rd Coy 9th Platoon, 144th Canadian Infantry
Born 13 November 1875 to Thomas and Margaret McDermott of Ballywalter, County Down.
The 15 May 1896 he married Agnes Martha Taylor at Carrowdore Presbyterian Church County Down, occupation labourer. Irish 1901 census with his wife and children 28 Castlereagh Street, Newtownards County Down occupation breadserver. 1911 with his wife and children at 31 Spamount Street, Belfast Ireland, occupation labourer.
At the time of his death his wife was residing at Carrowdore, County Down, Ireland.
Died 25 January 1919. At rest in Brandon Cemetery Manitoba Canada.
Notes from his service records
Enlisted 20 December 1915 aged 40 years and 1 month into the 144th Overseas Battalion. Residence 117 Harrett Street, Winnipeg Canada, occupation labourer.
23 June 1916 training at Camp Hughes, Winnipeg.
Embarked from Halifax Canada 18 September 1916 disembarked Liverpool 25 September 1916.
12 January 1917 he was transferred to 18th Canadian Reserve Battalion (Manitoba) at Seaford East Sussex
9 August 1917 he was admitted Moore Barracks 11th Canadian General Hospital Shorncliffe suffering from mental stupor. 22 August 1917 transferred to Lord Derby War Hospital, Warrington Cheshire. 19 September 1917 admitted to the Canadian Red Cross Special Hospital Buxton for transfer to Canada. 17 October 1917 Invalided to Canada on Hospital Ship Uruguay from Liverpool for further medical treatment, he was suffering from dementia. In Canada he was admitted on the 31 October 1917 into Ontario Military Hospital Cobourg suffering from paresis. 4 January 1918 transferred to Newmarket Hospital Canada. He was discharged from the army to his residence 28 March 1918.
