Born 23 August 1894 in Lymm, Cheshire to Colonel John Edward Grimble Groves, CMG (1/5th Cheshire Regiment) and Ethel Lloyd, nee Allen. 1901 with his mother and siblings visiting the home of Frances Eavey at North Lawn, Westgate on Sea, Kent. 1911 with his parents and siblings at Leans Green, Lymm Cheshire. On the 7 June 1919 he married Norah Evelyn McGarel Hogg at The Annunciation, Saint Marylebone, Westminster
On the 15 January 1959 He and his wife Leila Theodosia (Born 1.4.09.) disembarked alone from Southampton on Carnarvon Castle bound for Durban South Africa. His status, Housewife , address in England was Albert Cottage, Osborne Isle of Wight. He was originally listed for the departure, but was taken of the list, his status was army officer.
Died in hospital Cape Town 27 February 1977 as the result of a fall before Christmas and a subsequent stroke

Lt. (A:/Capt) Edward Julian Groves, M.C., 1st Battaion Cheshire Regiment.
For conspicuous gallantry and initiative in an attack. He led his company to the final objective without artillery support in the face of intense machine-gun fire, inflicted heavy losses on the enemy and captured a large number of field guns. When the enemy counter-attacked and broke through on both his flanks he carried out a skilful withdrawal and collected and reorganised scattered parties of other units under heavy machine-gun fire
His name was legally changed to Edward Julian Groves-McGarel by Deed Poll.

NOTICE is hereby given, that EDWARD JULLIAN MoGAREL-GROVES (now or lately called EDWARD JULLIAN GROVES, of Tregunter-road, Earls Court, S.W., D.S.O., M.C., Captain in the Army (late of the Scots Guards) (a natural born British subject) ), has, by deed poll, dated the second day of March, 1926, duly enrolled in His Majesty's College of Arms on the 22nd day of March following, assumed and adopted the surname of McGarel-Groves in lieu of and in substitution for the surname of Groves and intends henceforth upon all, occasions to sign and subscribe himself and to be styled in all legal and other documents by the surname of McGarel-Groves in lieu of and in substitution for his former
