CVT -16 USS LEXINGTON the "BLUE GHOST"

The CVT-16 USS Lexington "The Blue Ghost" now down graded to a training aircraft carrier coming into Galveston, Texas

It is a real sight, I hope everybody can see it someday

Sorry, but this photo was taken in Galveston, Texas and not Pensacola. That is Seawolf Park in the background, including the modern (for 1970 anyway) pavillion at the tip of the park. The dark spot opposite the fishing pier and closest to the Lexington is an LVTP 5 that was on display in the 1970's. The USS Stewart (DE-238) and the USS Cavalla (SS-244) are just out of the photo to the left. The Lexington came to Galveston regularly in the 1960's and 70's, and was usually opened partially for tours. She made her last trip to Galveston in the early 90's. The USS Cavala is a Gato class submarine that was the submarine which located the Japanese flett just before the battle of the Philippine Sea. She also sank the IJN CV Shokaku, one of the carriers that attacked Pearl Harbor.

Excellent information mpeebler
