These Japanese women train with an older Type 11 LMG against the expected American invasion of mainland Japan. Happily, the war ended before that invasion became necessary - casualties on both sides would have been horrific.
Notice the assistant gunner has a container of ammunition clips. These were placed in the hopper and were fed by weight of the lid pressing against them. This type was less than satisfactory and had been withdrawn from service earlier in the war. As a possible invasion became imminent, older weapons such as this were taken from storage and issued to people such as these two women.
