My gramp was in the Royal Artillery. I have his service records they don’t make much sense to me, however, he was discharged from the army and reassigned to the Royal Navy. Will he have a different service number? If so how do I find his service number for the Royal Navy. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi and welcome
I am assuming you have his complete service records?
RN service numbers were indeed different to army numbers see below.

The numbers of ratings consisted of a Prefix indicating their Port Division (responsible for their training, promotion and manning of ships), a forward slash, a Main Letter denoting their trade, and a 4-6 figure number. An additional letter "X" after the main letter indicates that the rating was engaged after the the new pay code of the early 1930s was introduced.

See if you can see something similar on his record , if you do that is his number for the Royal Navy

Thank you for this. I attach his service record to show when he left the army and went into the navy could you see if you can find the service number I can't see it. Also maybe you could help me to understand his records it's all very confusing. I would be most grateful.

His army number is 1102146, it's on the beginning of every document you've posted. There are no RN service records here at all.
His records states he transferred to the RN on 15 Nov 1943 but there are no RN records here.

Do you have any other records @Loraine ?

This is his army records as I had his army number to get them from the National Archives. I don't have any other records and not sure how to go about getting his RN records? My father who is still alive said that his dad was transferred from the army to the RN and went on a minesweeper but that is all I can gather I'm a little stuck.

Thank you for replying

Ok @Loraine, I'm an Aussie and I served in the RAN and getting service records here is quite straight forward but unfortunately those in the UK are quite convoluted and in different places.

I've been able to find that records from 1920's onwards in the RN are held by Ministry of Defence (Naval Disclosure Cell) and you will need to apply using the application form here:
https://www.gov.uk/get-copy-military-records-of-service

At the moment I can't help you much from Australia. I do know that there are people in the UK that will do the research for you but will require payment although it's not usually exorbitant

If you go to this page you can search for researchers that can do this for you
https://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk.../paying-for-research/independent-researchers/
