While going over genealogy notes I compiled a few years ago, I found mention of my great-grandfather on Mom's side. He was a one-armed German immigrant who owned a bar in a small, very rural Nebr town.
I was close to my great grandmother, Estelle but her husband passed away before I was born.
I remember Dad saying he only had one arm but was quite tough and didn't need to hire a bouncer for breaking up bar fights. I assumed he lost his arm in WW1 and emigrated here. I then poked around online to see he was born in 1868 which made him a trifle old for the great war. (passed away in 1948)
In what other wars consistent with his age could he possibly have been wounded? I realize he could also have lost the arm in some sort of accident.
