I won't even travel through the desert without a case of water, emergency food, IFAK, night vision, and a rifle with a thermal clip on. The desert is all sorts of "What the heck is that??" at night and sometimes even during the day. Plus it can kill the unprepared.Nothing out there but scorpions, rattlesnakes, very large spiders with hairy legs, oh yeah can't forget the coyotes and mountain lions. When you have a break down after dark be damned careful where you walk.
One trip out to the lake which total was 24 miles from home, I came over a rise on the black top and saw what appeared to be rat running across the hot asphalt, I passed after it cleared the road and looked over to see a huge scorpion. He was a monster. Where I lived we had mountain lions coming down the mountain and taking peoples dogs that were chained and not able to run or defend themselves. Two cats came through the 5 acres I lived on and you could tell it was a male and female by looking at the size of the tracks. They most likely were chasing a rabbit because both were in full running stride looking at the tracks.I won't even travel through the desert without a case of water, emergency food, IFAK, night vision, and a rifle with a thermal clip on. Still gets a watching if it's ever on the box in our house. A classic. Still get annoyed when she zones out at the key result!Looks like the setting for the old movie Andromeda Strain !
Rachel Nv a population of 48....... probably the people that operate the elevators under the buildings. This is in fact part of Nellis AFB range and area 51. I have been up there at Tonopaugh Nv the state capitol during winter and it was so nice at 6000 foot elevation. We dropped off a transmission to a friend of my Boss and his wife was cooking chili and the smell was all over the neighborhood. The entire town is built over the old mine. The old historical casino was built underground due to extreme heat during the day. The air force has a radar station for the Nellis range and it sits atop the highest point on a little mountain plateau looking out across the entire state and at the edge of the city limits. My last living friend where I lived in NV is 90 and he was a crane operator at area 51 and retired from the machinist union a very long time ago, went back to work when Las Vegas began their freeway rebuilding project and he operated a crane for that entire operation. Sometimes I deeply regret leaving that little town but I got homesick and was highly disappointed once I did get back to Houston. Tonight I looked at the old place where I lived and my brother lived also and the good neighbors house is now just a shell with the roof missing. I think possibly her son may have died and her older daughter because just a few years ago the photo of google earth looked normal. The 5 acres next door where we lived is now just a parched area where they allowed the pine trees and all the fruit trees just die in place. You can still see the circular driveway outline and the front patch that was all grapes. It looks very spooky to see it knowing all those people are now gone.
