Royal Army Medical Corp, 3rd Fld Amb, WW2

Did you or a member of your family, serve in the R.A.M.C during WW2.
Do you have any memories, or details that you can share with others. My late Father was a Private in the RAMC.
During his life he only spoke briefly about his time in the Army, as during the latter years of WW2 he was held as a Prisoner in Stalag X1A, Altengrabow.

Sadly I only have a few individual photos of him in his Army uniform , and truly wish I had one or two with him and his Unit.

If you can help in anyway, it will be appreciated.

Regards K

Hi Katy. Found quite a few references to the POW camp online. I don't know if you've seen these before, but they are links to info about Stalag XIA, with some personal stories and pics, too:

Good luck with your search!

Hi Reloader, mega brilliant links , sincere thank you. The first link had photos, one being a group of POWs at the camp fence...omg...sal;

My heart was racing as I looked at the faces of the men in view. For all I know my Father could be on the photo, or even just out of frame...
Father always said, by the time he got home to Tyneside all the welcome troops home, celebrations, had finished.

If by chance you ever come across any other similar links, please do post on site. sincere 'Thank You' Katy

hi there

my grandfather was in stalag x1a altengrabow. He used work in a quarry there. he was there for 2 years in total at the end of the war. I doubt he has photos of him at the camp but he ha vivid memories even though he is 91. His name is robert john thomas from pentraeth, north wales. He also lived in London before the war. He joined the royal welsh fusiliers before they took heavy losses on leros. after this they joined up with the kings own regiment.

Stalag X1A and Camp 78 Sulmona

Is there anyone out there whose father was transferred to X1A from Sulmona? My Dad left me a whole pack of letters from both POW camps plus all his time in the Army, letters to his parents. I am in the middle of sorting them all out it, is so traumatic!

My father was Harry Twidle 4th Battalion Green Howards. He started in Guisborough, then went to Middlesbrough and on to Moreton-on the -Marsh before heading for Weymouth. The rest is a bit hazy I think he was in France for a short while, the censor had a great time blotting out the words, before being sent to Africa where he was taken prisoner around May 1942. He joined up in 1939 and discharged in 1946 unfit for further service.

If I can help you or you can help me please let me know as I am a novelist writing my second novel based on this story. I hope my new book will be entitled "Without Harry" in memory of my Dad.
