Lexington-class aircraft carrier USS Saratoga (CV-3) arrives at Pearl Harbor after transiting from the West Coast of the United States. 6th Juine, 1942
Removing the temporary patch from Colorado class battleship USS West Virginia (BB-48), June 1942. The long wavy section in the center is her 13.5" armour belt, massively distorted by the close impact of several Type 91 torpedoes. Her hull above and below the belt suffered far more damage. Shipyard workers also had to remove the remains up to 70 dead sailors
A salvage worker deep in the bowels of USS West Virginia (BB-48), May 30th, 1942. At the bottom of the photo is a bomb, a converted 16" naval shell, which fortunately did not explode.
New Orleans-class cruiser USS Quincy (CA-39) at Noumea, New Caledonia. 3rd August 1942. She was lost at the battle of Savo Island on 9th August with the loss of 370 crew

French guns crew of the starboard battery aboard the British ocean liner RMS Empress of Russia refitted as an armed merchant cruiser. she was attached to a squadron blockading German merchant shipping in Philippine waters and retained her Chinese crew, but took on French sailors to man her guns. Later, she was transferred to the Indian Ocean. 1914-15
