On June 9, 1944, USS Intrepid (CV-11) departed Naval Air Station, Alameda, San Francisco, bound for Pearl Harbor. The ship's war diary dryly notes that they were "carrying passengers, aircraft, vehicles and miscellaneous cargo."

Intrepid's flight deck was packed with aircraft, jeeps, trucks, busses and other assorted goods. The aircraft were broken down as:

  • 42 Grumman F6F Hellcat fighters.
  • 20 Douglas SBD Dauntless dive bombers.
  • 3 Beech C-45 Expeditor transports.
  • 3 Stinson L-5 Sentinel spotter planes.

During a patrol off the coast of Lowestoft on 26 March 1945, she spotted a Type XXVII "Seehund" and attempted to ram the vessel. While she did hit it, the impact caused the submarines torpedoes to detonate.
Despite surviving this encounter, she was considered too badly damaged to be worth repair and was subsequently written off.
