As most of you know by now, it is Memorial Day weekend in the United States. The actual day is Sunday, 30MAY. This is a national holiday honoring ALL of our Fallen Heroes from ALL wars. Those that made The Ultimate Sacrifice. From Saturday through Monday there will be parades marched, speeches made, 21 gun salutes fired, Taps played, and tears shed by those that remember, all across the country. Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, school children, and various veterans groups will decorate every military cemetery in the country with an American Flag at every gravesite. And, hopefully, the gravesite of every Fallen Hero NOT buried in a military cemetery will have his/her resting place visited and shown respect and rememberance.
Following is a list of the men of C Company, 2nd Battalion, 502nd Parachute Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division, that I served with from 30JUN66-30JUN67, who were Killed In Action in the Republic of South Vietnam.
#1, PFC William Leon, was the first American KIA that I saw. We were somewhere NW of Dak To. This was less than 2 weeks after I got to VN and, looking back, it had a big effect on me. It was definately a reality check. #8, PFC Jarel W. Ayers, was the trooper who was my bunker mate in the KILLING RATS, SIR story. A stand-up guy. You'll notice that #s 9-15 all died on the same date. Most of them died in the wee hours of the morning when our position was almost over-run, and the NVA got inside our perimeter. It was an intense 4-5hr. battle that was sometimes hand-to-hand. I'll maybe tell about it, if and, when I feel up to it. It was probably my scariest night in Nam. #9, 1st LT. Larry D. Earls, was the CO, one of the best line officers that I served under. #s 21-25 were guys that I had served with, but died after I had rotated out of VN. To put these casualties in perspective, the ratio of WIAs to KIAs was often 3 or 4/1.
Do me a favor. Please read the names of these Fallen Heroes out loud. Just to guarantee their names on somebody's lips this Memorial Day Weekend. It's the least they deserve.
Please feel free to add any names of other Fallen Heroes, from any war, any country, to this thread so they may get the respect and recognition that they deserve.
