The Cactus Air Force ( Cactus Air Force ) referred to the allied airpower of the Allies of World War II attributed to the island of Guadalcanal, from August 1942 until December 1942, during the initial phases of the Guadalcanal Campaign, particularly those who operated from the Henderson Field Airport. The term "Cactus" came from the Allied code-name on the island.
The Cactus Air Force was composed of several types of aircraft, employed in hunting and escort, bombing and patrol missions, including the Grumman F4F Wildcat, Douglas SBD Dauntless, Grumman TBF Avenger, Grumman J2F Duck, Bell P-39 Airacobra, Consolidated PBY Catalina and Lockheed Hudson, these, belonging to the Royal New Zealand Air Force (RNZAF).
After December, the official name of the unit became Allied Air Forces in the Solomons ( Allied Air Forces in the Solomon Islands ), but Cactus Air Force (Cactus Air Force) was still frequently used to refer to the organization. Below is a collection of photos illustrating the above text showing the facilities and aircraft used by the Air Force Cactus:
