USN:
Midway class aircraft carrier USS Coral Sea (CVA-43) steams alongside Alstede-class stores ship USS Bellatrix (AF-62) during underway replenishment in Western Pacific waters. Gearing-class destroyer USS Duncan (DDR-874) is at left. Plenty of aircraft of Attack Carrier Air Wing 15 (CVW-15) are parked on the flight deck. Visible are F8U-2N Crusaders of VF-154, F3H-2 Demons of VF-151, A4D-2 Skyhawks of VA-155, A4D-2N Skyhawks of VA-153, AD-6 Skyraiders of VA-152, WF-2 Tracers of VAW-11 Det. D, A3D-2 Skywarriors of VAH-2, and a single HUP-3 helicopter of HU-1 Det. D. Canada:
River class frigate HMCSD Magog after being torpedoed by U-1223. 1 Oct 1944
On 14 October 1944 Magog joined Convoy ONS 33G in the Gulf of St. Lawrence. At 1925 local time, Magog was torpedoed and damaged by U-1223 near Pointe-des-Monts, Quebec (near Baie-Trinité, Quebec), losing 65 feet (20 m) of her stern, killing 3 crew and injuring 3 others. After the torpedoing, Magog was taken in tow first by HMCS Toronto, then HMCS Shawinigan to the safety of a bay, and later to Quebec by the salvage tug Lord Strathcona where she was eventually declared a total constructive loss.
