The main battery and compartmentalization of future USS New Jersey (BB-62) is apparent in this construction Photograph at Philadelphia Navy Yard, July 1942.
The image is showing part of the machining operation to bring the turret base into spec. The machine on #2 turret is a purpose-built boring mill that is cutting the top of the armour in situ prior to mounting the roller bearing assembly that will carry the turret itself.
