ROTHWELL William. Private, 1989, 21st Australian Infantry. Died of sickness, 5th November 1915, aged 22 years. The son of Robert and Sarah Rothwell, of 13 East Street, Feniscowles, Blackburn. Too far from England thy grave to see but not to far to think of thee.
GOODMAN Albert Thomas. Lance Corporal, 19486, 1st Essex Regiment. Died of enteric fever, 7th November 1915, aged 21 years. The son of George and Alice Susan Goodman, of 56 Maldon Road, Southend-on-Sea.
SOMBORN Hubert. Gunner, 42871, 10th Heavy Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery. Died of dysentery 9th November 1915, aged 20 years at Military Hospital, St Andrews, Malta. Son of Paul and Agatha Somborn (nee Savage), of 44 Pirbright Road, Southfields, London.
Some notes from what remains of his army records.
He enlisted on the 19th August 1914 at Wandsworth, aged 19 years and 185 days, occupation, clerk. He joined the Royal Garrison Artillery on the 21st August at the Citadel, Plymouth. He had previously served with the 5th East Surrey Territorials. His father, Paul of 44 Pirbright Road, Southfields, London, S.W. 18 was his next of kin. After completion of his training he embarked for the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force on the 5th July 1915, disembarking at Alexandria (in transit) on the 19th July 1915. He then embarked from Alexandria on the 3rd August 1915, disembarking at Gallipoli on the 9th August 1915.
He fell ill with diarrhoea at Gallipoli and was admitted into 2nd East Anglian Field Ambulance on the 11th September 1915, discharged fit for duty on the 13th September 1915. He was admitted to 3rd East Anglian Field Ambulance with dysentery, invalided to Malta and admitted into Military Hospital, St Andrews, Malta on the 15th October 1915. Reported dangerously ill, on the 5th November 1915, next of kin notified. He died in hospital on the 9th November 1915 of dysentery.
