William John THOMPSON. Corporal 18829, 13th Royal Irish Rifles.
Born 15 February 1888 to William John and Elizabeth Thompson nee Bailey of 3 Ballycullen, Newtownards County Down. Irish 1911 census wuth his widowed mother and siblings at 26 John Street, Newtownards occupation, homestitch mechanic (mending sewing machines)
At the time of death his mother was residing at 161, Mill Street Newtownards, Co. Down,
Killed in action at Thiepval on the first day of the Battle of the Somme, France, 1 July 1916 aged 28. His mother was granted a war gratuity 4 September 1917 revised 5 December 1919.
Commemorated on a family memorial in Movilla Cemetery Newtownards County Down Northern and on the Thiepval Memorial Somme France.
