Cheadle, Staffordshire remembers the War Horses. At the point horses were brought the be selected for service in the Great War. When selected they would have been blessed by the parish vicar and taked for service.
In early August 1914, horses in Cheadle and the surrounding district were gathered in the yard of the Wheatsheaf Hotel, to be inspected by War Office officials. The horses deemed suitable were branded and requisitioned by the Government, for use in the Great War. Two days later the selected horses were gathered in Cheadles Market Square, before they were taken away by the army.
This year the Cheadle Discovery Group and the other partners (Cheadle Town Council, British Legion and Historical Society) in the Cheadle Remembers the Great War Project are commemorating this historical event.
This will be done by gathering a number of horses on the Market Square, so that one of the pictures taken from 1914 can be recreated. In addition, it is hoped that two horses will be ridden by uniformed riders from the Wheatsheaf car park, up Cross Street to join the other horses on the Market Square, recreating another of the pictures from 1914.
