William (Willie) SHIELDS. Lieutenant, Manchester Regiment attached to 45th Squadron, Royal Flying Corps. Formerly Private 1450, North Irish Horse. Born 31 January 1889 at Seaforde, Downpatrick, County Down. 1901 residing with his parents and siblings at No 2, Stranacum, County Antrim.
Killed in action whilst flying a Sopwith Camel over France when he was shot down on the 5 September 1917 aged 28 years.
At rest at Voormezeele Enclosures Bo.1 and No.2 West-Vlaanderen, Belgium.
Samuel (Sammy) SHIELDS. Military Medal. Sergeant 13588, 8th Royal Irish Rifles. Born at Stranocum, County Antrim. 1901 residing with his parents and siblings at No 2, Stranocum, County Antrim. Died 2 July 1916 aged 23 years. His father Samuel was granted a war gratuity 3 September 1917, revised 4 October 1919.
Commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France.
Their brothers Neil, joined 14th Royal Irish Rifles and Robert, joined the Royal Flying Corps.
Sons of Sarah, nee McNeill and Samuel Shields of 33 Upper Frank Street, Belfast, Northern Ireland.
Both commemorated on a family memorial in Dundonald Cemetery, Belfast.
