When I was stationed in Berlin 1967-1969 and our battalion did the Spandau Guard, I and another soldier were nominated to go inside the prison. Yes, I did see Hess, not a nice person, every one still jumped to his calling. We were allowed to have a look around the prison inside and out.To my surprise but sadness in some of the cells had english writing and names of prisoners. and ticked off in blocks of seven the time spent in the cells. Some of the walls were covered with this, I wonder if they survived. We were were not allowed to carry any thing to write with or cameras. I often wondered why not. When the prison was torn down I guess it was guarded well, whilst this was being done.
