This simple memorial is dedicated to the above regiment was located at The National memorial Arboretum. It consists of a tree and a list of the fallen in the 1955-1958 Cyprus Conflict.

John Terence ARGYLE. Private 23192032
Born in the Hickley, Leicestershire registration district on the 29th April 1937 only son of John and Beatrice M Argyle nee Wills of 55 John Street, Hinckley.
Died of his wounds 1st June 1956 aged 19 at British Military Hospital, Nicosia. as the result of a grenade attack on a lorry in Varosha Famagusta along with Private Kenneth Michael Hebb on the 30th May 1956. At rest in Waynes Keep Military Cemetery, Nicosia, Cyprus

Father told son is dead as plane lands.
His father was flown out by the Army and left London on Friday in a B.O.A.C. plane which does not call at Cyprus. When he arrived at Beirut Airport he was told his son had died. Mrs Argyle was hustled into another plane and landed at Nicosia Airport three-quarters of an hour before the funeral. An Army vehicle rushed him to the military cemetery just in time for the for the funeral service.
Private Argyle who just before he left for Cyprus three months ago.

Born in the Loughborough, Leicestershire the 7th May 1937to Reuben and Dorothy Attenborough of John Street, Hinckley. Died of his wounds 30th May 1956 aged 19, British Military Hospital, Nicosia

Tigers were bomb victims in Cyprus
Loughborough youth, 19, died.

The lorry into a terrorist bomb was thrown in Cyprus yesterday killing two and injuring 22 others was carrying members of the 1st Bn The Royal Leicestershire who were returning to Golden Sands camp from a rehearsal of the Queen's birthday parade.
The two killed are Pte John Attenborough, 29 Clifford Road, Loughborough only son of Reuben and Mrs Attenborough
and Pte C,. M. Webb of Hyson Green, Nottingham.

Month's leave for Tigers' Cyprus Hero.
Hero of one of the worth terrorist attacks on British soldiers in Cyprus. Pte Trevor Jervis of the 1st Royal Leicestershire Regiment is expected home this weekend for a month's leave.
Pte Jervis of 35 Brookside, Sketchley, Hinckley was the driver of the lorry taking a party of Tigers back to their camp in Cyprus after a Queen's Birthday Parade rehearsal. The lorry was ambushed by terrorists who tossed an bomb into the vehicle. Pte Jervis was wounded in the leg and shoulder by the explosion. The lorry burst into flames but he drove on and arrived safely at the nearest military post. Several soldiers were killed and many wounded.

Some weeks earlier he had saved the life of an RASC officer who was overcome by cramp while bathing in the sea. Pte Jervis and a friend swam out to him and rescued the officer.

Born 14th May 1937 to Walter and Beatrice A Bott nee Joyce of Leicester Road, Ibstock, Leicestershire.

Killed 31st August 1956 aged 19 in a road accident between Famagusta and Nicosia

Ronnie Newman BOWMAN Private 23148225
Born in the Ashby de la Zouch 1937 to Walter and Edith A Bowman nee Tunks.
Killed along with Lieutenant Samuel James Gresham Walker on the 27th March 1956 aged 19 as the result of two terrorists bombs were thrown at their patrol jeep from roadside gardens in Franklin Roosevelt street, Famagusta

Ronald Archley CRISELL. Warrant Officer II 14762327 Born in the New Forest, 19th September 1925 to William Arthur and Gertrude Mable Crisell nee Vokes.
Died 17th May 1956 aged 30. At rest in Waynes Keep Military Cemetery, Nicosia, Cyprus

Cypriot Bomb kills Tiger.
Warrant Officer Crissell was travelling in a jeep along Pluarchos Street, Famugusta when two bombs were flung from an orange grove. Warrant Officer Crissell who served in Korea leaves a wife who is living in Famagusta. He was a sergeant at Glem Parva Barracks in 1948 and went with the First Battalion in the Support Company to Hongkong.

Kenneth Michael HEBB. Private 22978337 Born the 22nd March 1936 to Joseph and Olive Hebb of Lindsay Street, Nottingham.
Killed 30th May 1956 aged 20 along with John Terence ARGYLE in a grenade attack in Varosha, Famagusta

Harry Gordon HILL. Lance Corporal 23137483 Born in 1933 at Langold, Worksop, Nottinghamshire to Alfred and Lilian Hill nee Boardman
Killed along with Cpl Ronnie Shilton 07May 1956
he was aged 20. His body was found sometime later in a shallow grave in the Kyrenia mountains.

2 Tigers killed by terrorists 'Reprisal' for executions
Readers may find this article disturbing
The Cyprus terrorist organisation Eoke claimed today both Tigers as a reprisal for the hanging of two Cypriots sentenced for terrorism. Eoke claim was made by leaflets distributed in Nicosia
naming to two soldiers. The leaflets said both soldiers were hanged yesterday and buried secretly.
Cpl Hill was reported missing by the British authorities in December. He cam from Langold, Nottinghamshire.

Cyprus body may be missing Tiger.

A body which may be that of L/Cpl Gordon Hill, the Royal Leicestershire Regiment soldier whom EOKA claimed to have held as a hostage and then to have hanged as a reprisal for the executions of terrorists has been found in Cyprus, it was disclosed by the War Office today
An Army officer went to Hill's home at Langold near Worksop, last night to give them this news.

Hill armed with a Sten-gun and two loaded magazines disappeared from a camp near Kyrenia last December.
It was reported yesterday that Hill's Sten-gun had been found after the capture earlier this week terrorists.

His mother said at her home today "I heard on the wireless yesterday that Gordon's Sten-gun had been found by some troops who had captured some Terrorists near a farm house. I am hoping that he may be alive."

Tiger, 22, died after Cyprus shooting.
A Regular soldier serving the 1st Battalion, The Royal Leicestershire Regt., is one of four British Servicemen killed during the past 48 hours in Cyprus.
He is 22 year old Cpl William Robert Holden of Tile Hill, Coventry. Died in British Military Hospital, Nicosia yesterday morning after being shot by terrorist gunman at Paralimmi village on Tuesday night.

Fatally wounded as brother wed.
City Soldier had asked for leave.
On the day of his elder brother's wedding a 20 year old Leicester soldier died in a Cyprus Hospital (BMH Nicosia) from gun shot wounds in his back.
He was on guard at the gates of his camp at
Famagusta when the shot was fired. The soldier was Private Derek Arthur Morris serving with the 1st Royal Leicestershire Regiment. Derek has asked for leave to attend the wedding of his brother. But his request was turned down because he had only six months engagement left to do. Later the same day another wire told (his parent's) that he was dead. Yesterday a formal letter stated that Derek had been accidently shot in the back with a rifle outside the camp at Famagusta at 5.20 am on Saturday. Derrick was an ex-pupil of Lancaster Boys' School.

Born in the Barton on Irwell the 28th April 1926

Son of John and Edith Pinner nee Appleby.

Murder village has a curfew.
The operation at Kalposida nicknamed by the troops as "Murder Village" - follows the ambush two nights ago of four British Army vehicles passing through the village.

Sgt Alfred Pinner of the Royal Leicestershire Regiment was killed in the ambush. His home was in Old Trafford Manchester.

Body on Beach: May be Midland Soldier.
A body washed up yesterday is belived to be that of Private Ronnie Kenneth Poultney an 19 year old National Service man serving with the 1st Bn Leicestershire Regiment. Poultney was swept out to sea and presumed drowned on April 19th.

'Tiger' Dies in Cyprus. Was Wounded.
The son of Mr and Mrs H Rowley of 55 London Road, Hinckley.
Pte Malcolm T H Rowley the 1st Battalion, The Royal Leicestershire Regiment has died of wounds received while on patrol in Famagusta.
Private Rowley (21), was unmarried and lived with his parents before joining the Army for his National Service. Mr and Mrs Rowley received a telegram from the Army Council informing her of Malcolm's death. Before joining the Army 12 months ago - nine months of which he spent abroad. Malcolm was a carpenter and joiner apprentice to his uncle Mr C Wormleighton'


George William SHEFFIELD. Private 23148259 Born in the Edmonton registration district Greater London on the 1935 to Cecil D and Kate Sheffield nee Lambert.
Died 27th February 1956. 30th May 1956 aged 21.

Tiger Dies in Cyprus


A member of the Royal Leicestershire Regiment, Pte George William Sheffield, 21 of Hathern, is reported to have died in Cyprus as a result of a road accident.
A National Serviceman, he went to Cyprus after completing 10 weeks' basic training. He worked at Willowbrook Ltd, Loughborough.

The War Office said in a statement issued yesterday that information available points to the fact that Private Ronald Shilton of the Royal Leicestershire Regiment, missing in Cyprus since early last year was murdered by E.O.K.A.
