The grenades were discovered on 12 August 2005 in the area of a Bronze Age burial mound by a metal detector enthusiast who, on closer inspection, placed them back into the ground and notified the Police. They were subsequently identified as self-igniting phosphorus grenades.
The grenades are glass bottles containing phosphorous - which burns violently on contact with air. They were issued in crates to the Home Guard during World War II, but were never used. After the War, the Home Guard, not knowing what to do with them, often buried the grenades.
