At 0020 hours on June 6, 1944, British troops in gliders landed near Pegasus Bridge, spanning the Caen Canal. The troops took the bridge and held it until they were relieved by fresh troops later that day.
This is the new bridge however the old bridge has been preserved and is located next to the new museum just over the new bridge on the north side of the Orne River.
