GALLIPOLI
Christopher SCOTT June 4th 1915. Private 1955, 1/4th East Lancashire Regiment killed in action. He was the son of Christopher of "Overdale" Milnthorpe. He is commemorated on the Helles Memorial, Turkey and Gallipoli
BELGIUM
Albert GARTH October 4th 1917. Private 14763, 6th Border Regiment. He was the son of John and Emma of Field Cottage, Milnthorpe and he is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial, West Vlaanderen, Belgium.
Some notes from what remains of his Army record. He joined up at Carlisle on the 5th September 1914 aged 21 years and 10 months and working as a farm servant. He served in France from the 26th September 1915 to the 8th July 1916 when he was transferred on Hospital Shipp St Dennis to England then on to the 4th Northern General Hospital, Lincolnshire from the 13th General Hospital, Boulogne, France with a gun shot wound to the knee. He was wounded on the 3rd July in the field, treated at 3rd Casualty Clearing Station and the transferred to 13th General Hospital. He returned to France the 7th September 1917 and on the 4th October 1917 he was killed in action. No record could be found of him serving and being killed in Belgium.
Charles HYDE M.M. and Bar, April 10th 1918 aged 27. Sergeant 14768, 8th Border Regiment. He was the son of William Thomas and Mary Hyde, of Laburnum Cottage, Milnthorpe, Westmorland. He is commemorated on the Ploegsteert Memorial, Hainaut, Belgium. Some notes from what remains of his Army record. He joined up on the 5th September 1914 and transferred into the Army Reserve aged 22 years and 10 months and was employed as a mole catcher. On the 14th September 1914 he was called to the colours and joined the 8th Border Regiment as Private 14768. He was promoted to Lance Corporal on the 13th March 1915, Corporal on the 25th October 1916 and Sergeant on the 23rd March 1917. He served in France from the26th September 1915 . Wounded in action, gun shot wound to his back on the 3rd July 1916. Treated at a Casualty Clearing Station in the field the transferred to 12th General Hospital, Rouen, France. On the 5th July he was sent to England on ship Salta from Rouen and was admitted to General Hospital, Manchester. He returned to France on the 6th October 1916 to the 10th April 1918. He was reported as missing on the 10th April. In his record there is a letter from soldier called Clark not sure to his parents . The letter has been damaged by fire and water. It appears on the morning of the 10th April the Germans overran their position after a battle. This soldier was taken prisoner by the Germans and he went on to say " I am afraid your son Charles was killed on the morning of the 10th April 1918. I am almost sure it was Charles I saw lying in the trench when the German's took me prisoner. He was shot through the head but the Germans would not let me stop to help"
FRANCE
James GARTH April 24th 1916. Private 15140, 8th Border Regiment. He was the son of John and Emma of Field Cottage, Milnthorpe. He is at rest in La Chaudiere Military Cemetery, Vimy, Pad de Calais, France (The CWGC have 25th April 1916). Some note from what remains of his Army record. he joined up at Carlisle on the 5th September 1914 aged 19 years and was employed as a sawyer. He fought in France from the 26th September 1915 to the 25th April 1916 when he was killed in action.
Edward ASHBURNER May 17th 1916 aged 20. Private 8/14711, 8th Border Regiment, died of wounds . He was the son of William Robert Burrow Ashburner and Mary Ann Ashburner, of Milnthorpe. He fought in France from the 29th September 1915 to his death He is at rest in Ecoivres Military Cemetery, Mont -St.Eloi, Pas de Calais, France
Edward Crayston MASHITER July 14th 1916 aged 20 Private 14331, C Coy, 8th Border Regiment. He was the son of Edward and Alice of The Square, Milnthorpe. Prior to enlistment at the age of 19 years he was employed as an electrical engineer. He fought in France from th 26th September 1915 to his death. He is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France
THOMPSON, Ralph William July 16th 1916. Private 14356, 8th Border Regiment . He is commemorated on the Heilly Station Cemetery, Mericourt-L'Abbe, Somme, France. Six and quarter miles S.W. of Albert (The CWGC have the 19/7/1916) Some notes from what remains of his Army record. He enlisted on the 5th September 1914 aged 20 years and 11 months and was working as a painter. and posted to the Army reserve. 15th September 1914 he was called up. He gave his next of kin as his father, John William of Beetham Road, Milnthorpe and his mother was called Elizabeth. He fought in France from the 26th September 1915 and was wounded in action, with gun shot wounds on the 13th July and treated at 103 Field ambulance and he died of his wounds on the 19th at 36, Casualty Clearing Station.
John SPEDDING July 20th 1916 aged 22. Gunner 921, 39th Siege Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery. He was the son of William and Ellen Spedding, of Milnthorpe, Westmorland and husband of Sarah Elizabeth Thorp (formerly Spedding), of 1, Glasgow St., Barrow-in-Furness. He is buried the Mericourt-L'Abbe Communal Cemetery Extension, Somme, France
George SWINDLEHURST July 31st 1916 aged 20. Private 15823, 8th Border Regiment, killed in action. He was the son of George and Jane of Haverflats Lane, Milnthorpe. He is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France
William KNIGHT August 26th 1916. Private 14886, 8th Border Regiment. He was the son of Christopher and Bridget Ellen of Park Road, Milnthorpe He is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France. Some notes from what remains of his Army record. He joined up on the 5th September 1914 and posted to the Army Reserve. He was aged 21 years and 8 months and worked as grocer. The 15th September 1915 he was called to the colours. Posted to France on the 26th September 1915. His only brother Private G/58511 Norman of the Middlesex Regiment formerly 25349, Border Regiment, survived the war.
Frederick James BARNES October 21st 1916. Private 14740, 8th Border Regiment. He was the son of Jacob and Mary and in 1901 he and his siblings were living with their widowed mother at Harmony Hill, Milinthorpe and in 1911 he was living with his brother Robert William at Hill Side, Milnthorpe and was a railway porter. He is commemorated on the Pozieres British Cemetery, Ovillers-La Boisselle, Somme, France. Some notes from what remains of his Army record . He enlisted on the 9th September 1914 at Carlisle and was posted to the Army Reserve aged 31 years and was employed as a labourer. On the 14th September 1914 he was called to the colours of the 8th battalion. He was in France from the 26th September 1915 to the 21st October 1916. He was wounded in action, gun shot to the face between 27/28th July 1916 and was treated in 76th and on the 1st August 1916 was with 75th Field Ambulance. he was later discharged fit for war service and returned to his unit in the field. On the 21st September 1916 he was killed in action. His sister Margaret J Taylor of West Leigh, Park Road was his next of kin.
Jack WILKINSON October 21st 1916 aged 33. Corporal 15872, B Coy, 8th Border Regiment. He was the son James and Mary Jane Wilkinson, of Hamilton Terrace, Milnthorpe. He is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France

John PARKER October 26th 1917 aged 22. Private 15773 2nd Border Regiment. He was the son of Mr J Parker of Park Road, Milnthorpe. He is commemorated on the Hooge Crater Cemetery, West-Vlaanderen BELGIUM
Edward Henry PARKER March 21st 1918 aged 21. Private 32637, Westmorland and Cumberland Yeomanry, 7th Border Regiment. He was the son of J and Edith Edith , of Park Rd., Milnthorpe. He is at rest in Hermies Hill British Cemetery, Pas de Calais, France
Martin ASHBURNER April 30th 1918. Rifleman 96384, 1/5th King's Liverpool Regiment, killed in action. formerly 2544 Lancashire Hussars yeomanry. He was the son of Mrs Elizabeth Jennia of Harmony Hill, Milnthorpe. He is commemorated on the Loos Memorial, Pas de Calais, France
Percy Wilks CLARK, May 8th 1918 aged 23. Private 90775 30th Machine Gun Corps (Infantry) formerly 32635 Border Regiment. He was the son of Edward and Alice of Chestnut Cottage, Milnthorpe. He is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial, West-Vlaanderen, BELGIUM
James Septimus PUNCHARD April 2nd 1919 died at the White Lodge, Boscombe, Hampshire aged 44. Lieutenant 5th Royal Lancaster Regiment. He was the son of Frederick Burt and Mary of Kirkby Lonsdale, Westmorland. He is at rest in St Mary churchyard, Kirkby Lonsdale, Westmorland ENGLAND

Frederick Richardson WILKINSON January 8th 1920 aged 27. Lieutenant 1/23rd Sikh Pioneers. He was the son of Mr N and Mrs A E Wilkinson of District Bank House, Church Street, South Shore, Blackpool. He is at rest in Haidar Pasha Cemetery, Turkey and Gallipoli.
