In humble thankfulness to almighty God for the blessing of Victory and Peace and in undying memory of those who went forth from the parish to fight for Right and laid down their lives in the cause this Lych Gate is dedicated MCMXX (1920)

Samuel ADAIR. Colour Sergeant 6820, 14th Cheshire Regiment. Born 1874 to Son of Peter Monteith and Elizabeth Adair, nee Barber of Great Budworth, husband of Anna Dorothy Adair, of 45, Church Street, Great Budworth, Cheshire. 1911 he was residing with his wife Dorothy at 98 Seymour Place, London, occupation Taxicab driver. His wife has her place of birth as Germany. He died 3 December 1915. aged 41 years. At rest in St Mary and All Saints Churchyard, Great Budworth, Cheshire Plot S.W. Row 3 Grave 3 (Beside the footpath)
Some notes from his army record -
He enlisted at Great Budworth 13 March 1902 aged 24 years and 10 months, occupation, footman. he was posted to the 6th Dragoon Guards 17 March 1902 as Private 4829. The 20 May 1902 he was transferred to the Cheshire Regiment. He deserted from the army from the 13 March 1902 to 8 June 1902, 88 days. Arrested and returned to his regiment. Tried by Regimental Court Martial. Sentence reduced to the ranks for an act to the prejudicial of good order and military discipline.
Served in India from 26 October 1903 to 31 March 1909. Whilst in India he met and married Anna Dorothy Etta at St Johns Church, Rapur, India 28 December 1908. Post to UK 1 April 1910. At date not recorded he was transferred to the Army Reserve. He was mobilized at Chest 5 August 1914 at Private 6820, Cheshire Regiment. Appointed as Acting Corporal 3 September 1914 with the 3rd Battalion. Sergeant on the 31 October 1914 with the 14th Battalion. Promoted to Colour and Orderly Room Sergeant with the same battalion on the 16 November 1914. He was medical discharged 4 July 1915 as being no longer physically fit for war service. He had recurrence, (new growth) of a gastric carcinoma (Stomach cancer) He had served 13 years and 9 days with the colours.


Robert C ADAIR. Driver 117494, 100th Brigade, Ammunition Column, Royal Field Artillery. Died at Salonika 17 July 1918. Born in Great Budworth, Cheshire. At rest in Kirechkoi-Hortakoi Military Cemetery, Greece.

Allen ATKINSON. Private 78622, 3rd Cheshire Regiment. Born 1890 to Hugh and Sarah Anna Atkinson, of Crossfields, Aston by Budworth, Northwich, Cheshire. Died at 8th Durham VAD Hospital, Hartlepool Durham 19 November 1918 aged 28 years. His mother was granted a war gratuity 25 October 1919. At rest St Mary and All Saints Churchyard, New part grave 412, Great Budworth, Cheshire.

John Giles BRAMHALL. Lance Corporal 36583, 10th Cheshire Regiment. Born 1882 at Great Budworth, Cheshire to Robert and Sarah Bramhall. 1911 residing with his parents and siblings at School House, Comberbach, Northwich, Cheshire, occupation aged 29 years, domestic gardener Enlisted on the 25 March 1916 aged 24 years, occupation, Gardener. Residing at School House, Great Budworth. On the 26 June 1916 he married Mary Olive Beswick at the parish church, Hartford, Cheshire. On the 10 July 1916 he joined his regiment at Rouen, France and was killed in action 1 August 1917.

Edward COOK. Lance Corporal 18932, 9th Cheshire Regiment. Born 1889 at Great Budworth to Mr and Mrs Mosley. husband of Ellen Cox (formerly Cook), of 1, Nelson's Place, Northwich, Cheshire. Died at General Hospital, Colchester, Essex 24 May 1918 aged 29 years. His widow was granted a war gratuity 9 September 1919, revised 6 November 1919. At rest in St Mary and All Saints Churchyard, New part grave 417. Great Budworth, Cheshire.

Albert James DALE. Private 9127, 2nd Shropshire Light Infantry. Born 1891, eldest son of William and Emma Dale at Congleton, Cheshire. At the time of his death his mother had remarried now called Emma Ashton of Birkin Heath Cottages, Rostherne, Knutsford, Cheshire. Killed in Action 19 February 1915 aged 24 years Commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres, Belgium.

Frederick DICKENS. Private 11574, 8th Cheshire Regiment. Born 1891 to William and Harriet Dickens, nee Beech of South Bank, Great Budworth, Cheshire. In 1911 he was still residing with his parents and siblings at South Bank. Died of wounds on board Hoop ship, (HMHS) S.S.Devanha and buried at sea 6 September 1915 aged 25 years. His father William was granted a war gratuity 5 January 1916 revised 9 September 1919. Commemorated on family memorial in St Mary and All Saints Churchyard, Great Budworth, Cheshire. Also commemorated on the Helles Memorial, Turkey including Gallipoli.

John EGERTON-WARBURTON of Arley. Captain Scots Guards who was born December 13 1883 to Piers Egerton-Warburton, of Arley Hall, Northwich. Husband of Lettice Egerton-Warburton (now Mrs. Waters), of 9, Berkeley Square, London. Died August 30 1915 from wounds received in France at the Second Western General Hospital, Whitworth Street, Manchester. His effects went to Lettice Egerton Warburton, widow and Geoffrey Egerton Warburton, captain, Cheshire Yeomanry. At rest in a Family Vault in St Mary and All Saints Church, Great Budworth, Cheshire.

Joseph GOULDING. Lance Corporal 277640, 2/7th Manchester Regiment. Son of William and Prudence Goulding, of Belmont Smithy, Great Budworth, Northwich, Cheshire. Native of Barnton, Cheshire. 1911 residing with his mother and brother Frank at 22 Townfield Lane, Barnton, Cheshire. His occupation aged 15 years, apprentice bricklayer. Died of wounds 23 July 1917 aged 22 years. His mother was granted a war gratuity 26 November 1917 revised 12 November 1919. At rest in Coxyde Military Cemetery, Belgium.

Thomas Henry HARRISON. Private 27826, B Coy, 18th Welsh Regiment. Born 1879 to Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Harrison, of Manchester. Husband of Elizabeth Harrison, of "Mount Pleasant," Earl's Lane, Rickmer, Northwich, Cheshire. Killed in action at Bourlon Wood 24 November 1917 aged 38 years. Commemorated on the Cambrai Memorial, Louverval, France.

H HARTLEY. Private 96515, 1st King’s Liverpool Regiment. Born 1900 Mrs. P. Hartley, of Poplar View, Comberbach, Northwich, Cheshire. Died 18 April 1918 aged 18 years. At rest in Gezaincourt Communal Cemetery, Extension, Somme, France.

Albert KETTLE. Private 24209, 18th Cheshire Regiment. Born 1891 Charles Henry and Alice Kettle, of 52, Station Road, Lostock Gralam, Northwich, Cheshire. Died 17 February 1917 aged 26. At rest in Berks Cemetery Extension, Belgium.

Sydney LEICESTER. Private 13835, 12th Manchester Regiment. Killed in action 7 July 1916. Born 1890 at Tabley, Cheshire to William and Ann Leicester, nee Burgess. 1891-1901 he was residing with his parents and siblings at Green Lane, Tabley, nr Great Budworth. 1911 still with his parents at Green Lane, occupation, farm horse man. Commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France. His father, William was granted a war gratuity 23 November 1916, revised 11 September 1919.

Peter MADDOCK. Private 13190, 12th Cheshire regiment. Son of Thomas and Hannah Eliza of Great Budworth, Cheshire. 1891 he was residing with parents at Comberbach Village, Cheshire. 1901 and 1911 with his widowed mother at Senna lane, Comberbach. Occupation aged 15 years, coal carter. 1911 his occupation was railway porter for the Cheshire lines. Killed in action 29 October 1916 at Salonika, Greece. His mother was granted a war gratuity 31 January 1917, revised 7 October 1919. Commemorated on his parent’s memorial in St Mary and All Saints Churchyard, Great Budworth, Cheshire. At rest in Karasouli Military Cemetery, Greece. Plot A Grave 121.

Millington, of 19, King's Rd., Erdington. Died of pneumonia 4 November 1918 aged 29 years. At rest in St Barnabas Churchyard, Erdington, Warwickshire.

Frederick NAYLOR. Private 10/13678. A Coy 9th Cheshire Regiment. Born 1891 at Birkenhead, Cheshire to Stephen and Hannah Naylor. In 1891 he was residing with his parents and siblings at Archway Road, Roby, Lancashire. 1901 with his parents and siblings at Hill Top Cottage, Great Budworth, Cheshire. 1911 with his parents and siblings at Crabtree Cottage, Aston, Great Budworth. His occupation aged 20 years, blacksmith. At the time of his death his parents were residing 13 High Street Great Budworth, Cheshire. Died 6 November 1918 aged 27 years from wounds received in action. His mother was granted a war gratuity 30 April 1919, revised 12 December 1919. Commemorated on his parent’s memorial in St Mary and All Saints Churchyard, Great Budworth, Cheshire. At rest in Awoinght Cemetery, France. Plot III, Row G Grave 2.

John PERCIVAL. Sapper 134226, 80th Field Coy, Royal Enginners. Born 1896 to Charles and Frances A. Percival, of Aston by Budworth, Northwich, Cheshire. Died 27 September 1916 aged 20 years. At rest in Warloy-Baillon Communal Cemetery Extension, Somme, France.

Joseph Moss RADCLIFFE. Private 226914, 1st Monmouthshire Regiment. Born 1892 at Northwich to John and Mary Ann Radcliffe, nee Moss. Enlisted at Comberbach, Cheshire. Married to Elsie Whitby 1914 at Great Budworth, Cheshire Killed in action 19 June 1917, aged 25 years. At rest in Loos British Cemetery, France.

William RATHBONE. Private 26216, 2nd Cheshire Regiment. Born 1895 to Robert H. and Ada Rathbone, of 66, Hartford Road, Davenham, Northwich, Cheshire. Died 3 October 1915 aged 20 years. Commemorated on the Loos Memorial, France.

John Cyril RIGBY. Private 116095, 58th Battalion, Machine Gun Corps, (Infantry). Formerly Private 33802, Shropshire Light Infantry. Born 1899 at Frodsham Cheshire to Thomas and Kate Rigby, nee Billington. 1901 residing with his parents and siblings at Ivy Cottage, Frodsham, Cheshire. 1911 with his parents at Holly Bank, Comberbach, Cheshire. Killed in action 22 March 1918. His mother was granted a war gratuity 30 October 1919. Commemorated on the Pozieres Memorial, Somme, France.

Robert STANLEY. Private 8/11452, 8th Cheshire Regiment. Born 1888 to Frederick and Louisa Stanley, of Gib Hill, Antrobus, Cheshire. Died of sickness 19 October 1918 aged 30 years. At rest in Wellington Garrison Cemetery, India.
Some notes from his army records -
He joined at Chester 25 August 1914 aged 26 years and 2 months, occupation, farm horse carter. Resided with his parents at Gibb Hill.
While stationed at Perbright, Surrey he was confined to barracks (CB) for 5 days and forfeited 2 days’ pay for overstaying his pass (permission to leave camp) from 11 April 1915 to 11pm on the 12 April 1915 25 hours and 30 minutes. On the 26 June 1915 he was posted to join the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force (MEF) disembarked at Port Suez. He embarked from Port Suez 24 November 1916, disembarked at Basrah. 9 December 1917 and marched into 2nd Brigade Base Depot to await deployment to his regiment and 23 February 1917 he joined his regiment in the field. He fell ill on the 20 July 1917 and was admitted with a debility to a Field Ambulance at Sindeyeh, later transferred to No 3 British General Hospital, Basrah. From there he was invalided to India on Hospital Ship, Madras 17 August 1917. The 25 August 1917 he disembarked at Bombay and admitted to Colaba War Hospital, Bombay. He was transferred on the 22 July 1918 to Kete Convalescent Camp hospital. Wellington, India. He was reported at seriously ill, 14 October 1918, dangerously ill 18 October 1918. Died 19 October 1918 at the Section Hospital, Kete Convalescent Camp of influenza and pneumonia.

Edgar Percy STAPLES. Private 36289, 12th Cheshire Regiment. Born 1882 at Bath, Somersetshire to John and Jane Staples, nee Shean. 1901 with his parents and siblings at 20 St Marks Road, Bath. 1911 He was a boarder and employed as a footman at The Dene, Great Budworth, the residence of Mrs Ussher. He also His parents for the same period were at 27 Claverton Street, Widcombe, ne Bath, Somerset. Died 30 August 1917 aged 35 years. Commemorated on the Doiran Memorial, Greece.

He enlisted 18 March 1916 at Chester aged 31 years. He resided at The Dene, Great Budworth, occupation footman. After he had completed his training he embarked from Devonport 28 August 1916, disembarked at Salonika 9 September 1916. On the 12 September 1916 he joined the 12th Cheshire Regiment from Infantry Base Depot, Salonika. He reported sick with scabies on the 13 April 1917 and was admitted to 68th Field Ambulance. The following day admitted into 31st Causality Clearing Station and on the 15th admitted into No1 General Hospital, Salonika. At date not recorded he was discharged fit for duty. On the 30 August 1917 he was reported missing in action, presumed to have been killed in action.

His father William was granted a war gratuity 31 January 1918 revised 13 November 1919. At rest in Villers-Faucon Communal Cemetery Extension, Somme, France

John William TURNER. Private 14734, 15th Cheshire Regiment. Born 1895 at Comberbach, Cheshire to Peter and May Turner. 1901-1911 residing with his parents and siblings at Comberbach village. 1911 aged 17 years occupation, farm labourer. Killed in action 19 August 1917. His father was granted a war gratuity 12 January 1918 revised 7 January 1920. Commemorated on the Thiepval memorial, Somme, France.
Some notes from his army record -
Enlisted on the 1 September 1914 aged 19 years, occupation, teamsman on a farm (working with horses) and residing with his parents at Moss Terrace, Comberbach. After he had completed his training he embarked to France from Folkstone 26 September 1915 and disembarked the following day, port not given. He and the other soldiers marched into 4th Infantry Base Depot to await mobilization to his unit. On 15 July 1916 he received a gun shot wound to his left arm and was treated at 104th Field Ambulance. The following day he was invalided to England on H.M Hospital Ship, Salta. He was admitted on the 17th into 2nd General Hospital, Manchester and discharged fit for war service in France. His military occupation given on admittance, was bomber. He was killed in action 19 August 1917.

George WHITTAKER. Private 1680, 1/6th Manchester Regiment. Born 1889 to John and Mary Whittaker, of Park Side, Nether Tabley, Knutsford, Cheshire. Died 5 June 1915 aged 26 years. Commemorated on the Helles Memorial, Turkey, including Gallipoli.

Roland Sydney BYRAM. Second Radio Officer 161015, Merchant Navy of S.S. Glendene (Whitby). Born 1920 to Percy and Margaret Byram, of Hillcrest, Warbury Road, Anderton, Cheshire. Drowned at sea 8 October 1942 aged 22 years as the result of the ship being sunk by enemy action. His Will was administered at Chester 5 October 1943 to PERCY Byram, joiner. Commemorated on the Tower Hill Memorial, London.

Hubert EVANS. Marine PLY/X106336, Royal Marine. of Group, M.N. B.D.O. (2). (Mobile Naval Base Defence Organisation) Born 5 May 1923 at Hartford, Cheshire to Harry and Elizabeth Evans, of Comberbach, Cheshire. Killed 18 November 1943 aged 20 years as a result of an explosion along with Marines, Norman Heron and Ronald Palmer. At the time of the explosion they were on HMS Menace and they are all laid to rest in the same grave at Syracuse War Cemetery, Sicily, Italy, in Grave I.A.5. The MNBDO II Formed January 1941. Disbanded May 1944.

George HOLLAND. Sergeant 543730. Royal Army Medical Corps. Mentioned in Despatches. Born in Cheshire to George and Alice Holland. Died 10 January 1945.
At rest in Florence War Cemetery, Italy.

William Roger HUBBARD. Ordinary Telegraphist D/JX405109 Royal Navy on HMS Lanka. Born 4 August 1924 at Great Budworth, Cheshire. Died at sea 12 February 1944 aged 19 years. Commemorated on the Plymouth Naval Memorial, Devon.

James Peter Mosley LEIGH. Flight Sergeant, Air Bomber, 1803621 Royal Air Force (VR), 10 Squadron RAF. flying in a Handley Page Halifax B III, bomber. Born 1917 to Oswald Edward Stanley Mosley and Mary Eleanor Olive Leigh, nee Stirling-Cookson. Husband of Stelle Therese nee Cleveland. Killed in action died 21 July 1944 over enemy territory. At rest in Reichswald Forest War Cemetery, Germany.

Drowned at sea 18 April 1945 aged 21 years. Death record shows, cause of death, supposed drowned. Commemorated on the Tower Hill Memorial, London.

Walter SCOTT. Lance Corporal 2694828, Corps of Military Police. Born 1916 to Walter and Mary Scott, of Great Budworth, Cheshire. Died 25 February 1942 aged 26 years.

Kenneth WRIGHT. Sergeant, Wireless Operator of 58 Squadron Royal Air Force VR. Born 1919 to Alfred and Mary Ellen Wright, of Cogshall, Northwich, Cheshire. Died 3 March 1941 aged 22. At rest in St Mary and All Saints Churchyard, Great Budworth, Cheshire. New Part, Grave 125.
