Medal of Honor citation for the Ploesti Mission

Lieutenant Colonel Addison E. Baker, Air Corps, United States Army. For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity above and beyond the call of duty in action with the enemy on 1 August 1943. On this date he led his command, the 93d Bombardment Group (H), on a daring low level attack against enemy oil refineries and installations at Ploesti, Rumania. Approaching the target his aircraft was hit by a large calibre antiaircraft shell, seriously damaged, and set on fire. Ignoring the fact he was flying over terrain suitable for safe landing, he refused to jeopardize the mission by breaking up the lead formation and continued unswervingly to lead his group to the target upon which he dropped his bombs with devastating effect. Only then did he leave formation, but his valiant attempts to gain sufficient altitude for the crew to escape by parachute were unavailing and his aircraft crashed in flames after his successful efforts to avoid other planes in formation. By extraordinary flying skill, gallant leadership, and intrepidity Colonel Baker rendered outstanding, distinguished, and valorous service to our Nation.
A brave and dedicated chap.
I cant help wondering though if his crew would have been very happy with his decision to carry on flying?, rather than land when it was safe to do so?. Suppose it doesnt really matter now anyway and it would be nice to think they were. Did his crew get an award? (just a thought)

Lt. Col. Addison E. Baker was born in January 1907 in Chicago. He entered the service at Akron, Ohio. He was a National Guard officer who had been called to active duty in 1940. By 1943, Baker was a lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Army Air Corps and commander of the 93rd Heavy Bombardment Group, Eighth Air Force, assigned to Benghazi, North Africa. It was from this point that he led his group as part of a daring low level attack against enemy oil refineries and installations at Ploesti, Romania.
