Lawrence Edward Grace OATES

Lawrence Edward Grace OATES, Captain of 6th Inniskilling Dragoons. Born 17th March 1880. Who having served his country with distinction in the South African War 1901-2. Joined Captain's Scott's Antarctic Expedition 1910, reaching the south pole 17th January 1912 and on the return journey, Lat 80'8'8' in the hope of saving the lives of his companions gave his own life 17th March 1912.
This monument is placed here by his fellow citizens as a record of the brave act of a very gallant gentleman. A.D.1913. He was the son of William Edward and Caroline Annie. On the 27th May 1880 he was baptised at St Mary, Putney , In 1881 he was living with his parents at Meetwood, Headingley, Leeds. 1911 he was now serving in the army stationed in India aged 30.
(Wills and Admin, Ancestry) He lived at Gestingthorpe Hall, Castle Headingham, Essex died 17th March 1912 in the Antarctic Region. His effects went to Bryan William Grace Oates, Esquire.
This memorial tablet is in St Peters Church (Leeds Minster) Leeds, Yorkshire.
