Joshua BUTTERWORTH, Private 2554, Loyal North Lancashire Regiment, died 26th March 1900 at Malta, aged 30 years 10 months.
This memorial was erected by his comrades of G Company.

He was born on the 7th June 1868 to Joshua and Sarah and was baptised at St Chads Church, Rochdale on the 11th December 1870. His parents were living at 20 Devon Street, Rochdale. In 1881 he was working as a doffer in a cotton mill aged 12 and was living with his parents and siblings at 111 Freehold Street, Rochdale.
Some notes from his army record which have been severely damaged by water and fire caused by the Blitz over London in WW2.
He attested on the 11th May 1888 aged 19, His father was his next of kin and he was living at 14 Mansfield Street, Rochdale. He was posted to the depot of North Lancashire Regiment the following day at Preston and he was given army number 2554. He was posted to the 2nd Battalion on the 24th May 1888 and then on the 16th December 1893 posted to the regimental depot. He was transferred to 1st Class Army Reserve at Private on the 10th May 1895. He was recalled to Army Service under Special Army Order of 20th December 1899, on the 26th December 1900. He was posted to the 2nd Battalion in Malta on 10th March 1900 and died on the 27th March 1900.
