VENABLES John. Private 16554, 2nd Duke of Wellington\'s Regiment died 27th May 1919 aged 25 at his home.
Extended Description
He was the son of Thomas and Mary Penelope of Heathfield Square, Knutsford. He is at rest in Knutsford Cemetery, Cheshire.
Some notes from what remains of his army record. He enlisted on the 2nd September 1914 aged 19 and 6 months, occupation, gardener. His father, Thomas of 42, King Street, Knutsford was his next of kin. On the 10th November 1914 he was posted to the Scottish Cavalry Depot, 1st Reserve Regiment of Cavalry, 5th Dragoon Guards as private 6761, On the 7th September 1915 he embarked Southampton he was posted to the Mediterranean where he was transferred to the 8th Duke of Wellington and served in Gallipoli . On the 13th December 1915 he was on active service in Sulva Bay and later Mudros and Alexandria. On the 1st March 1916 he was at Sidi Bishr. He was posted with his regiment to France, embarking Alexandria on the 25th June 1916 and disembarking in France of the 3rd July 1916. He was attached for a short time to the Tank Corps. On the 12th June 1918 he was at Infantry Base Depot at Etaples and he was posted and then transferred to the 3rd West Ridings on the 16th June 1915. He was demobilized whilst on leave from France on the 11th February 1919 at Heaton Park, Manchester to his home at 42 Kings Street. It was a family belief that he was awarded to Military Medal. The army had no record of him having been awarded the medal and his medal cards also has no mention and the same with the London Gazette.
