Our medics at Cam Lo did a lot of work on civilians - mostly little kids. Every day, ammo convoys going to Rockpile & VCB went by. Also convoys of ARVINs heading west.
All little kids would stand along the road with a thumb up, shouting "GI, YOU GIMMEE CHOP CHOP!!" They were thrown a lot of C ration cans. I noticed ARVINs would hurls cans like they were trying to pitch a 90MPH fastball. These would sometimes hit a child resulting in a cut that required sutures.
The kids ate a lot of C rations? No - the cans were usually given to mom to sell at her roadside stand.
