Commemoration in St Giles Church, Codicote for Hugh William Reid, brother of -

Æneas Barkly REID. Lieutenant Royal Navy on HMS James Watt. Born in England 7 June 1837 eldest son of Louisa Margaret nee Barkly and William Reid, Esquire of the Node, Hertfordshire. Died 7 May 1961 aged 23 years. 1841 residing with his parents at Lionsdown, (Lyonsdown) Chipping Barnet, Hertfordshire.

Served on the following ships -

HMS Leander as Mate, 7 June 1856 – 23 September 1856. Hawke as Mate 20 January 1857 – 6 May 1857. Boscawn as Mate, 7 May 1857 – 11 May 1858 and James Watt as Lieutenant 8 March 1859 to his death 7 September 1861. Promoted to Lieutenant 15 May 1850.

His death was caused by a fall from his horse at Canea, Isle of Candia 7 May 1861 aged 23 years.

Wills and Admin, Ancestry -
Æneas Barkly REID. 18 October 1861 Letters of Administration of the Personal estate and effects of Æneas Barkly REID late Lieutenant in the Royal Navy serving on board Her Majesty’s Ship, James Watt a bachelor deceased who died 7 May 1861 at Canea in the Island of Candia were granted at the Principal Registry to William Reid of the Node in the parish of Codicote in the County of Hertford the father of the said deceased he having been first sworn. Effect under £450.

Barkly Reid, Lieutenant on the HMS James Watt, who fell from his horse and died while serving on the Isle of Candia, Malta, in 1861. The plaque was erected by the captain and officers of the HMS James Watt 'as a mark of esteem for the many good qualities by which he had attached himself to them'. Reid was just 23.

His Brother Hugh William Reid –
Hugh William Reid, Lieutenant Rifle Brigade. Second son of William Reid, Esquire, of The Node, in this parish. Died at Biarritz in the South of France, (where his remains are interred) on 23 May 1865 aged 24 years. ‘Dearly loved and deeply lamented.’
