Free French Navy Memorial

Memorial to Free French Naval Forces of WWII, who were based in the Firth of Clyde area. The memorial is on Lyle Hill, Greenock, overlooking Gourock and the river, from where many wartime convoys began and ended.
The dedication on the memorial is in French and English and reads - 'This monument is dedicated to the memory of the sailors of the Free French Naval Forces who sailed from Greenock in the years 1940-1945 and gave their lives in the Battle of the Atlantic for the liberation of France and the success of the Allied cause.'
Its design uses the Lorraine Cross symbol of the Free French Forces, incorporated with an anchor to represent their Naval Forces and is known locally as just, 'The Cross of Lorraine'.
