Thanks Bombardier, it was taken yesterday at Battery Park, Greenock, where there used to be a seaplane base during WW2. The hangars are all gone now and it's back to being a public park. The only trace of the former base is the concrete slipway on the shore just to the right of the picture. I was waiting for the Catalina flypast, just offshore from here. It was interesting to see the Catalina, which was the same one as you posted the pic of, but I was disappointed that for health and safety reasons, it wasn't allowed to land at the anchorage. Suppose that was too much to hope for! Still, it was great to see it make a few circuits, before flying off again.
Yeah I enjoyed seeing the Catalina too, I had never seen it fly before so it was a first for me.
I dont know, a sea plane that they wont land in the sea, whatever next ? bou;
By the way, the people who apparently were responsible for bringing the Catalina to the Clyde were at the event & were appealing to anyone who has memories, photos, memorabilia etc., of aviation on the river, to contact them. They have set up a new website:
You're right Droney - Cruachan has an Army number & is a L/Cpl, that's why they have a L/Cpl as his handler and the GSM is for N.I., where he was on duty for the required number of days with the Regiment.
OMG! I thought I recognised the place! I used to live and work in Greenock... still have fond memories and miss the beauty of Inverclyde. I've got long-distance relatives in Sutherland... Very nice pic. solthum and very cool comments. camo;
