Charles Joseph HULME

Private 202360, Charles Joseph HULME, 1/5th North Staffordshire Regiment. He was killed in action on the 14th March 1917.

He was born in Stoke on Trent. He is commemorated on the Hartshill War Memorial, Staffordshire, on Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France and also on the 13th November 2014 attached to a poppy at the Hartshill War Memorial. Some notes from what remains of his army record. He first joined the army on the 14th March 1911 and was posted to the 5th Volunteer Battalion, North Staffordshire Regiment as private 1625. He was married and he lived with his wife and children at 22, Shelton New Road, Stoke on Trent. He married Miss Louisa Maud Davies on the 4th June 1906 at Holy Trinity Church, Hartshill, Stoke on Trent, Staffordshire. They had four children. Elsie Maud, born 13th March 1907, Charles Joseph born 28th January 1910, Blanch May, born 23rd June 1912 and Ernest, born 26th September 1915 all while their parents were living at 22, Shelton New Road. He was by occupation a shoemaker working for Goodfallow of Fenton, Stoke on Trent, Staffordshire.

His mother, Blanch was living at 39, West Street, Penkhull Allotments, Stoke, Staffordshire.

On the 6th August 1911 he was at Annual Camp at Abergavenny, South Wales, and on the 4th August 1912 he was at Territorial Camp, Bow Street. Abersystwyth, Wales. On the 5th August 1914 he was embodied for war service. and on the 13th March 1916 he was discharged for the army on the termination of engagement with the colours under Army Regulation, para 392 (XXI) On the 18th June 1915 he was attached to the 29th Provisional Battalion attached to the 5th North Stafford Regiment. He was called to the colours on the 24th June 1916 and was posted to France on the 24th November 1916 and was reported missing in action on the 14th March 1917. He was struck off the strength of the Battalion on the 12th May 1917.
