Bloodhound, a ground-launched missile designed to bring down enemy aircraft, was in service from 1958 to 1993. British researchers also tried to make a version of Bloodhound that could bring down Soviet ballistic missiles. The Bloodhound was ultimately capable of reaching over 50 miles from the coast and climbing to a height of over 50,000 feet. It was launched by solid fuel rocket motors and was then propelled by ramjets, essentially jet engines with no moving parts, for most of the climb.
