ATKIN Thomas Robert, Corporal, (CWGC have Private) 10382 1st Kings Own Yorkshire Light Infantry killed in action 14th April 1915 aged 25. Son of Jane Burgess (formerly Atkin), of Church Terrace, Baslow, Bakewell, Derbyshire, and the late Frederick Atkin. In 1911 he was now a private soldier with the Yorkshire Light Infantry stationed at Pontefract. Commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres, Belgium

BRIGHTMORE Herbert Edgar, Private 26104, 2nd Duke of Wellingtons Regiment, formerly Private 305478, Army Service Corps died 10th October 1917 aged 20. He was the son of Herbert Eliza Ann nee Taylor, of Victoria Cottage, Baslow, Bakewell, Derbyshire. In 1911 The family were living at Hanover Building, Baslow. Herbert aged 14 was working as a labourer. Commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium
Some notes from what remains of his army record. He enlisted 12th December 1915 and posted to the army reserve as Private 305478, Army Service Corps. He was aged 18. He gave his address as 6, Nursery Street, Lion Restaurant, Sheffield, occupation machinists. He gave his mother, Eliza of Victoria Cottage, Baslow as his next of kin. He was mobilised on the 10th and posted on the 12th April 1917 to the Army Service Corps M.T. Depot at Grove Park. On the 10th June 1917 he had passed his driving test at Isleworth. He embarked Portsmouth on the 8th July 1917 on ship, SS Huntsland, and disembarked at Rouen the next morning 9th. Ont the 23rd July 1917 he was now with the 33rd Auxiliary Petrol Company, Army Srevice Corps. 29th July 1917, Compulsorily Transferred in the interest of the Service under A.O. 204/1916 to the West Riding Regiment for posting to the 2nd Battalion in the rank of private. He retained the A.S.C rate of pay and was allotted a new number, 26104. He joined the regiment in the field on the 4th October 1917 and was reported missing presumed to have died on or since the 10th October 1917

BURDEKIN Geoffrey Eric, Lieutenant, 3rd Sherwood Foresters [Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire Regiment] attached to the 1st Loyal North Lancashire Regiment. He formerly served as 2nd Lieutenant with the 2nd Worcestershire Regiment and with the 2nd Dorsetshire Regiment in India. He was killed by a shell while attending the Regimental Orderly Room at Beuvry 26th June 1915 aged 22. He was born in 1896 at York City to Benjamin Thomas (Solicitor) and Emily Jane Burdekin, of Hopefield, Somerton, Somerset, he also lived at . In 1911 he was at the Royal Artillery Depot at Woolwich as a Gentleman Cadet. Buried at Lievin Communal Cemetery, Extension, France



FERRANTI Basil Ziani De, Military Cross, Major,21st Siege Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery, died of wounds 12th July 1917 aged 26 at No 14 General Hospital Wimereux, France. He was the son of Sebastian Ziani and Gertrude Ziani De Ferranti, The Hall, Baslow. Derbyshire.. In 1911 the family were living at Eyam Woodlands, nether Padley, Derbyshire. Buried at Wimereux Communal Cemetery France

FROGGATT Arnold Joseph, Gunner 167462, 4th Siege Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery died of wounds 8th November 1918 aged 38. He was the son of John and Mary of Baslow and husband of Annie May Froggatt, of New Buildings, Baslow, Bakewell, Derbyshire. Buried at Fretin Communal Cemetery, France

HEATHCOTE William Francis, Private 46868, 1st Bedfordshire Regiment posted to the Hertfordshire Regiment, formerly Private M/289092 Royal Army Service Corps, killed in action 23rd March 1918 aged 19. He was born in Leeds, Doncaster to George Henry and Florence Heathcote, of The Institute, Edensor, Bakewell, Derbyshire. In 1911 the family lived at 3, Derwent View, Baslow. Commemorated on the Pozieres Memorial, Somme, France

HODGKINSON John Francis, Captain, 3rd Dragoon Guards died of wounds on the 10th November 1914 aged 35. at Casino, No 13, General Hospital Boulogne, France . He was the son of John Grundy and Eliza Catherine nee Walker , in 1881 the family were living on a farm at Upper End Baslow, Derbyshire His father farmed a 100 acre farm and employed 12 men. In 1911 his father was now widowed and he was living at Rose Hill House, Baslow. John was njown in the army a Captain in the 3rd Dragoon Guards. Buried at Boulogne Eastern Cemetery, France



HODGKINSON, Samuel Charles Lindsey, Lieutenant, H.M.A.S. Australia Royal Australian Navy died 1st August 1815 aged 28. He was born on the 9th October 1886 to Edmund and Elizabeth Millicent Hodgkinson (nee Heathcote). Born at Baslow, Derbyshire. Buried at Hassop Roman Catholic Cemetery, Derbyshire

HODGKISS Joseph Arthur, Military Medal, Sergeant 35451, B Battery 94th Brigade, Royal Field Artillery, mortally wounded in action at Paschaendeale Ridge ,Flanders on the 5th October and died 6th, 1917 age 23. Son of Alfred and Agnes Mary Jane nee McLeod, of Hawthorn Dene, Baslow. He is commemorated on a family memorial in St Anne's Churchyard, Baslow . Buried at British Cemetery, Godervaersevelde, Belgium

BATES R B, Private, Northumberland Fusiliers (Not listed with the CWGC as R.B.)It may be the following. Private 3499 Robert BATES, 1/4th Northumberland Fusiliers killed in action 15th September 1916. He enlisted at Bakewell, Derbyshire. He is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France

HOLLIS Ralph William, Corporal 23280, B Coy, 1st Worcestershire Regiment killed in action 27th May 1918 aged 27. He was born at Hampton Lucy, Warwickshire, lived at Towcester, Northamptonshire. He was the son of William and Emily Hollis, of Tredington, Shipston-on-Stour, Worccestershire and husband of Bertha Hollis, of Church Terrace, Baslow, Bakewell, Derbyshire. Commemorated on the Soissons Memorial, Aisne, France

SHELDON Arthur, Private 82486, 15th Durham Light Infantry died 29th May 1918 aged 18. Son of James William and Alice Sheldon, of The Green, Baslow. Commemorated on the Soissons memorial, France
Some notes from what remains of his army record. He enlisted into the army aged 17 years and 11 months on the 14th April 1917 and posted to the army reserve. His occupation was a motor driver and his lived at Baslow. His father, James was named as his next of kin. On the 7th July 1917 he was mobilised to sent the Sherwood Foresters Depot. He was the posted on the 18th July 1917 to the 85th Training Reserve Battalion, Scotton Camp, Catterick. He was sent to the 9th Training Reserve Battalion Rugeley, Staffordshire on the 21st August 1917. The 4th September 1917 he was posted to Gore St Camp !!. On the 1st November 1917 he was posted to the 52nd (Graduated) Battalion, West Yorkshire Regiment as Ashford as Private 94670 He was posted to France, embarking Southampton and disembarking at Boulogne, France all on the same day, 3rd April 1918. Posted to Infantry Base Depot at Etaples also on the 3rd. He was transferred to the 15th Durham Light Infantry as Private 82486 on the 6th May 1918. He joined his unit in the field on the 8th May 1918 and was reported missing in action between the 27th and 19th May 1918 in France

Native of Sheffield. killed in action in France 5th November 1917 aged 36. Buried at Oxford Road Cemetery, Belgium

Son of Son of Roger Jarrance. and Mary Ellen, nee Sidall of Bubnell View, Baslow Commemorated on his parents headstone in the churchyard at Baslow and also on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France

SIDDALL George Edward, Military Medal, Private 58660, 10th Sherwood Foresters [Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire Regiment]killed in action 13th October 1918 aged 40. Son of the late Henry and Charlotte Siddall, of Baslow, Bakewell and husband of Eliza Emily Siddall, of Pilsley, Bakewell, Derbyshire. Commemorated on the Vis-En-Artois Memorial, France

STROYAN Hugh Goodwin, ( Memorial has Private, Seaforth Highlanders) (CWGC have the following) Private 28891, 16th Manitoba Regiment, Canadian Infantry, died 23rd April 1915 aged 18. He was born on the 19th December 1895 to Ernest Joseph and Jessie Stroyan, of 4312, Dundas Street, Vancouver, British Columbia. Native of Derby, England. In 1901 the family lived at 149, Burton Road, Babington, Derbyshire. On the 7th October 1910 the whole family left England via Liverpool on passenger ship Empress of Britain bound for Quebec.
Buried at Seaforth Cemetery, Cheddar Villa, Langemark-Poelkapelle, West-V. Belgium No record was found to indicate that he served with the Seaforths

THORPE Frank, Private 57302, 16th Lancashire Fusiliers died 10th August 1918 age 18. Son of William and Sarah Ann, of Nether End, Baslow Commemorated on his parents headstone in Baslow churchyard and also on the vis-En-Artois, Memorial, France
