MACRO Arthur William. Ordinary Seaman J/38022 Royal Navy on HMS Aster. Born 16 November 1898 at Islington London to Henry and Sarah The Farm, Watton Road, Shipham. Enlisted 16 February 1915 on HMS Ganges. Occupation prior to enlistment farm boy. Died 4th July 1917 from injuries received from the explosion of a mine on the sinking of his ship. His ship and HMS Azela were escorting HMT Abbassieh from the Grand Harbour Malta bound for Salonika carrying No 62 General Hospital (ex-St David’s Military Hospital. 11 miles out the ship turned over a known minefield and passed through unscathed her escorts were not so lucky. HMS Azela was damaged on hitting a mine, Aster was sunk. His mother Laura Macro of High Street Shipham Thetford Norfolk was informed of his death. At rest in Plot C Grave 351 Capuccini Naval Cemetery, Malta.
