Arkendale War Memorial.
Located in front of St Bartholomew Church, Arkendale, Yorkshire.

To the glory of God.
In sacred memory of the Fallen in the Great War. 1914 - 1919

ADAMSON Fred. Lance Corporal 33085, 7th East Yorkshire Regiment died of wounds 11th June 1918 aged 27. Son of John Henry and Charlotte Adamson, of Providence Farm, Ferrensby, Knaresborough, Yorkshire. His father was granted a war gratuity on the 5th October 1918, revised on the 8th December 1919. At rest in Doullens Communal Cemetery Extension No 2, Somme, France.

FALL William. Gunner 174198, 286th Siege Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery died whilst a Prisoner of War in a hospital on the 11th October 1918 aged 39. Son of William and Hannah Fall, of Arkendale, Yorks. At rest in Cologne Southern Cemetery, Germany.

POWELL Swift. Driver T4/061384, Heavy Transport, Royal Army Service Corps died of pneumonia 2nd December 1918 aged 22 in the registration district of Oswestry, Denbighshire. Son Swift and Elleanor Mary Powell, (nee Haw) of Arkendale. Yorkshire. In 1911 he was as a horseman of a farm of William and Sophia Marston of Larkfield Riddlesden, near Keighly, Yorkshire. His father was granted a war gratuity on the 30th April 1919. At rest in Arkendale St Bartholomew Church Cemetery, Yorkshire.

HOUSEMAN Albert. Private 25595, 9th West Yorkshire Regiment killed in action 9th October 1917 aged 31. Son of John Robert. and Phoebe Houseman, (nee Saville)of Ferrensby, Knaresborough, Yorkshire and brother of William who also fell. Commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.

HOUSEMAN William. Private 270193, 2/6th Manchester Regiment killed in action 21st March 1918 aged 21. Son of John Robert. and Phoebe Houseman, (nee Saville) of Ferrensby, Knaresborough, Yorkshire and brother of Albert who also fell. Commemorated on the Pozieres Memorial, Somme, France.

LEAVESLEY Charles. Private 424662, 125th Labour Corps, formerly Private 47521, 2/8th Lancashire Fusiliers died of wounds in France 23rd November 1917. Born at York in 1881, lived at Beckwithshaw and enlisted at Harrogate of in Yorkshire, son of William and Ann. In 1891 he was living with his parents in Main Street, Staveley, Yorkshire . In 1911 he was living with his wife at Beckwithshaw, Yorkshire, occupation, gardener. His wife, Lilian, (nee Wise) was granted a war gratuity on the 12th August 1918, revised on the 5th December 1919. It appears the he first served as Private 49092 West Yorkshire Regiment and not Private 47521, 2/8th Lancashire Fusiliers. SDGW and his medal card show Pte 49092 West York Regt. Pte 424662 Lab Corps. At rest in Bois-Guillaume Communal Cemetery Extension, France.

MIDGLEY Edward Florian. Private 40144, 2/7th Royal Scots Fusiliers died of wounds 12th October 1916. Born at Heypark, York, lived at Knaresborough Yorkshire. Son of Aaron and Susannah of Ferrensby Knaresborough. In 1911 he was a farm worker for William an Annie Fall of Holgate Bank Farm, Arkendale, Yorkshire. At rest in Dernancourt Communal Cemetery Extension, Somme, France.

OUTRAM Frank. Private 15029, 2nd West Yorkshire Regiment killed in action 31st July 1917. He was born Buxton, Derbyshire. Commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres, Belgium.

POWELL John William. Private 40509 1/8th West Yorkshire Regiment killed in action 9th October 1917. Brother of Swift Powell who also fell. Commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.
