Francis James GUNTER. Lieutenant, 11th Hussars. Born 5th August 1893. Fell in action in the second battle of Ypres 24th May 1915. Son of Mrs. James Gunter, of Aldwark Manor, Alne, York, and the late Maj. Gen. James Gunter. Gazetted, Aug., 1914, to the 11th Hussars, and attached to the 12th Reserve Cavalry Regt. for training, becoming Lt. in Sept., 1914. Went to the front, 9th Dec., 1914. He is commemorated on a memorial is in church of St Stephen, Aldwark , also on the war memorial in Alne, St Mary, both in Yorkshire, and on the Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres, Belgium.
Alma FOSTER. Private 10452, 9th West Yorkshire Regiment died 9th August 1915. Commemorated on Alne, St Mary, Yorkshire war memorial and also on the Helles Memorial, Turkey (including Gallipoli)
George Henry ANDREWS. Private 7842, 13th Northumberland Fusiliers died 18th February 1916. Born at Easingwold, Yorkshire, enlisted at Durham. His widow, Annie, (nee Jones),was granted a war gratuity on the 6th May 1916, revised on the 2nd August 1919.At rest in Cite Bonjean Military Cemetery, Armentieres, Nord France.
Albert HARLAND. Private 17091, 2nd West Yorkshire Regiment died 1st July 1916 aged 26. Son of John and Sarah E. Harland, of Tholthorpe, Alne, Yorkshire. Commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France.
(Percy SMITH. as stated on the memorial Private Northumberland Fusiliers died 1st October 1916) The following is the same person. Percy SMITH. Private 34343, 8th Service Battalion, York and Lancaster Regiment, formerly 457, Northumberland Fusiliers, killed in action 1st October 1916. Born at Alne, Yorkshire, son of Henry Albert Smith, of the Bay Horse Inn, Aldwark, Alne, York; husband of Annie Smith, of 65, Bonlea Terrace, Thornaby-on-Tees. Commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France.

He was married to Annie Cummings on the 17th August 1912 at St Luke's, Thornby-on-Tees. Their children were called, Annie Elizabeth, born 18th January 1910 and Norman born 26th November 1914 at Thornby
Joined up on the 18th August 1914 aged 29 and 9 months, occupation, shunter. Lived with his wife and two daughters at 8 Russell Street, Thornby-on-Tees His parent were called Henry Albert and Annie of the Bay Horse Inn, Aldwark, Yorkshire

3rd July 1916 transferred to 34th Casualty Clearing Station.

5th July 1916 discharged fit for duty to 31st Infantry Base Depot.
12th July 1916 attached to 8th York and Lancs from Infantry Base Depot.
10th September 1916 transferred to 8th York and Lancs Regiment as private 34343
He was killed in action on the 1st October 1916.
Robert Henry MIDGLEY. Private 32832, 3rd Yorkshire Regiment (Yorkshire Hussars) died 2nd November 1916 aged 23 at the V.A.D. Hospital, West Hartlepool. Born at Easingwold and lived at Linton-on-Ouse, both in Yorkshire. Son of Benjamin and Mary Midgley, of Aldwark. Commemorated on Alne St Mary church war memorial, Yorkshire . At rest in St Stephen's Churchyard, Aldwark, Yorkshire.
William Alexander SINCLAIR. Private 4889, Army Cyclist Corps, formerly 13285, Sherwood Foresters, killed in action 10th April 1917 aged 22. Son of Donald and Mary Sinclair, of Aldwark, Alne, Yorkshire. At rest in Lever Crossing Cemetery, Fampoux, France.
Some notes from what remains of his army records.
Born at Perth, Scotland, joined up at Derby on the 25th August 1914 aged 19 and 246 days, occupation, fitter. Both his parents were his next of kin. They were living at The Lodge, Brailsford, Derbyshire. He was posted to 9th Notts and Derby Regiment Depot the same day he joined up. On the 1st March 1915 he was posted to the Army Cyclist Corps, 11th Division. After he had completed his training he embarked to Alexandria on the 1st July 1915, disembarking at Alexandria on the 19th July 1915 and later post to Gallipoli. While at Gallipoli he reported sick many times. It was not recorded as to his complaint. On the 9th May 1916 he reported sick at El Ferdan with a cut tendon in his right index finger. He was treated the same day at 31 General Hospital Port Said. He was discharged to duty as Class A status to 11th Division Base Depot, Metras and he rejoined his unit at El Ferdan on the 17th June 1916. On the 27th June 1916 he embarked from Alexandria, Egypt for France on 27th June 1916 H M Transport, Oriana.
On the 23rd November 1916 he was transferred to 20th Prisoner of War Coy and he was struck of the strength of the Cyclist Corps. He was posted back to joined the VI Battalion Cyclist Corps in the field on 16th March 1917, The following month he was killed in action on the 10th.
George WARD. Private 28292, 7th East Yorkshire Regiment died 12th May 1917 aged 28. Son of James Ward, of Linton-on-Ouse, and the late Jane Ward, husband of Elizabeth Ward, of Linton-on-Ouse, Yorkshire. Commemorated on the Arras Memorial, France.
John Francis COLLEY. (Memorial has Private Royal Air Force died 1st August 1917). (CWGC) Air Mechanic 2nd Class 28824, 21st Reserve Squadron, Royal Flying Corps died 2nd August 1917 aged 22. Son of William and Sarah A. Colley, of The Beeches, Tollerton, York. Born at Helperby, Yorkshire. At rest in Cairo War Memorial Cemetery, Egypt.
Stephen BARKER. Sergeant 16449, 12th West Yorkshire Regiment died 26th September 1917.(CWGC have 28th) aged 21. Son of Mr. and Mrs. W. Barker, of Tollerton, Yorkshire. Commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.
Henry Stephen MINTOFT. 2nd Lieutenant 1st East Yorkshire Regiment. Born 2nd June 1897 to Thomas John and Margaret of Alne, Yorkshire, died 4th October 1917. He lived at Low Hall, Alne, Yorkshire. His effects went to Thomas John Mintoft, gentleman. He is at rest in Oosttaverne Wood Cemetery, Belgium.
John Joseph BARKER. Private 21102, 1st Coldstream Guards died 27th November 1917 aged 30. Husband of Eveline Barker, of Calmholme, Stockton Lane, Yorkshire. Commemorated on the Cambrai Memorial, Louverval, Nord France.
Charles Thomas HUTTON. Private 119980 47th Machine Gun Corps died 23rd March 1918. Son of George and Harriet of Tollerton, Yorkshire. In 1911 he was working for Alfred J Tenniswood, Farmer, at Ledsham, South Milford, Yorkshire as a horseman. Commemorated on the Arras Memorial, France.
George Herbert BINNS. Private 352726, 1/9th Royal Scots killed in action 12th May 1918. Son of Robert and Hannah of Melrose House Cottage, Alne, Yorkshire. Occupation in 1911 aged 14, paper seller. Commemorated on the Ploegsteert Memorial, Belgium.
Henry Chamberlain OXLEY. Major, 5th South Wales Borderers, attached to 17th Northumberland Fusiliers, died of wounds 18th April 1918. He lived at Alne Hall with his wife Florence May. Son of George Henry and Harry Chamberlain Oxley. His parents in 1911 were living at Littleham Cross, Littleham Road, Exmouth. At rest in Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery, Belgium.
Richard BUTTERFIELD. Corporal 16285, 11th East Lancaster killed in action 28th June 1918 aged 28. Son of William and Elizabeth Butterfield, of Manor Farm, Aldwark, Alne, Yorkshire. At rest in Aval Wood Military Cemetery, Vieux-Berquin, Nord France.
Arthur ELSEGOOD. Private 85959, 4th Northumberland Fusiliers died 8th July 1918 aged 24. Son of Albert Edward Elsegood, of 19, Fitzroy Terrace, Heslington Road, Yorkshire. At rest in York Cemetery, Yorkshire.
Richard Samuel WARNER. Private 34482, 1st Northumberland Fusiliers, attached to 9th Trench Mortar Battery, died 5th August 1918 aged 37. Son of William and Catherine Warner; husband of Eliza Ann Warner, of Grange Cottage, Langthorpe, Boroughbridge, Yorkshire. At rest in Sandpits British Cemetery, Fouquereuil, France.
Arthur RENNISON. M.M. Sergeant 27926, 16th Lancashire Fusiliers, formerly 24119, King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry, killed in action 2nd October 1918. Son of John and Martha. In 1901 his mother was now a widow and they were living at Newton on Ouse, Yorkshire. He was working as a horseman on the farm of William George Rockliff at Court House, Newton on Ouse in 1911. Commemorated on the Vis-En-Artois Memorial, France.
William Owen PALLISER. Corporal 30356, 2nd Yorkshire Regiment killed in action 27th October 1918. Born and enlisted at Tollerton, Yorkshire. Son of Owen and Eliza of Tollerton, Yorkshire. At rest in Cross Roads Cemetery, Fontaine-Au-Bois, Nord France.
James MORRELL. Private 33216, 8th Yorkshire died 27th October 1918 aged 25. Son of Isaac and Mary Lee, of Aldwark, near Alne, Yorkshire. At rest in Giavera British Cemetery, Arcade, Italy.

Cecil Claude BENNETT. Driver T/66703, 2 Divisional Petrol Coy Royal Army Service Corps died at Dunkirk 29th May 1940 aged 19. Son of Arthur Charles and Evelyn Bennett, of Tholthorpe, Yorkshire and brother of Arthur Charles who also fell. Commemorated on the Dunkirk Memorial, France.
