Heroes of the Sea: Navy submarine performs historic feat by sailing beneath the Arctic ice sheet for the first time

The submarine Arpão began its transit to the north and on April 29th began to write another page, in the already significant history of the “Trident” class submarines, starting with the passage through the mythical parallel 66º33'N, which marks the border of the Polar Circle Arctic, something that, like the passage of the Equator, is a relevant milestone for all Sailors, and this milestone had not yet been reached by Portuguese submariners.

The unprecedented “feat”, of the NRP Arpão finding itself sailing in deep immersion with a roof of ice, confirmed by active sonars and probe, brought to all elements of the garrison a feeling of fulfilled expectation, which justified all the time and dedication committed to preparing the mission were beginning to pay dividends, further expanded with the presence of the Chief of Staff of the Navy, Admiral Henrique Gouveia e Melo, at the Combat Information Center (CIC).

After 39h 30min in deep immersion under the ice, the ship crossed the MIZ again to the east and returned to the surface with the feeling of mission accomplished, but there would be even more...

With the completion of this mission, the NRP Arpão became, if not the first, one of the very few conventional submarines to navigate under the ice, an area normally reserved for nuclear-powered submarines. It remained under the ice sheet for a total of around four (4) days, having also explored the operation in the Marginal Ice Zone, with a high density of loose ice, an area with high tacit value, an area in which no other submarine in the West operates. dared to operate, since World War II, with total success. In addition to adding new capacity to Portuguese submarines and, consequently, to the Navy, Arpão once again put into practice the “art of doing well”, which demonstrated that even with all the constraints, but with dedication, competence and strength of It is possible to continue to overcome new challenges by achieving objectives considered by many, including allies, to be insurmountable.
