A-4D - Marine designation (A-4B). USS ESSEX CVS-9 had a Marine squadron of these aboard. Sub Unit 1 H&MS 32 MAG32 was aboard during Midlink VI, Oct 1963. VA-81, Detachment 45 with their A-4D's came aboard Oct 1961 for a Nato cruise. Having this group aboard gave ESSEX the distinction of being the only CVAS in either fleet. A-4d's were aboard during the Cuban quarantine.

The device was to be used after the delivery of a nuclear weapon, so that the pilot would be protected against the flash of the detonation. It is known that during the Lebanon crisis in 1958 Skyhawks of VA-83 Rampagers aboard the USS Essex (CVA-9), and of VA-34 Blue Blasters aboard the USS Saratoga (CVA-60) were armed with nuclear weapons and standing by for any upcoming 'emergency

The A-4 is definitely a neat bird. I still remember when I was a kid, seeing my mother crying for the first time after hearing on the news about the Blue Angels disaster with their A-4's back in the mid 80's
