Yesterday I visited the People's Palace Museum, Glasgow and found this small exhibit tucked away in a darkened corner:

It tells the tale of WWI soldier, Private James Riley, who enlisted shortly after war was declared and was a gunner with The Cameronians (Scottish Rifles). Private Riley picked up a German drill book on the battlefield and kept it as a souvenir in his breast pocket, together with his metal shaving mirror. Subsequently, he was shot by a German soldier, using a Mauser similar to the carbine on display. The bullet passed through the drill book, but only dented the mirror, wounding him:

A closeup of the drill book shows where the bullet passed through an image of Christ on the Cross:

This was one man who could say for certain that his life was saved by Jesus!

Private Riley later recovered and returned to the trenches, where he served until demob in 1919 and returned to his wife and family in Glasgow.

P.S. - apologies for the quality and composition of the pics, I only had my phone camera on me!
