To the Glorious Memory of


Captain John Harold Ellerson RICKERBY, Military Cross. Silver Medal of Italy. A Coy, 5th Gloucestershire Regiment. Died 22 March 1918 aged 22. Son of Maj T E Rickerby and Mrs A E Rickerby, of Hafod, Shurdington, Cheltenham. Educated at Cheltenham College and Pembroke College, Cambridge. At rest in Savy British Cemetery, France.

Second Lieutenant Gordon Thomas Harcourt MORSE. 4th Middlesex Regiment. Died 12 October 1914 aged 21. Son of Lt.Col. R E Ricketts Morse, R.A.M.C. and Kathleen Morse, of Chargrove House, Cheltenham. At rest in Vielle Chapelle New Military Cemetery, Lacouture, France.

Sergeant 6884 William CHALLONER. 5th Kings Shropshire Light Infantry. Died 29 August 1916 aged 34. Son of Thomas and Mary Challoner, 35 Moorend Street, Cheltenham, husband of Minnie Challoner, of Little Hills, Shurdington, Cheltenham. At rest in St. Sever Cemetery, Rouen, France.

Sergeant 7824 Charles HURST. 2nd Wiltshire Regiment. Died 24 October 1914 aged 26. Son of R Hurst (late R.S.M.), of "The American Hotel." Stratford, Ontario, Canada, husband of Edith Alice Hurst, Ivy Cottage, Shurdington, Cheltenham, Glos. Commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres, Belgium.

Sergeant William John LOCKE. Grenadier Guards. No person with that name was serving and died in the stated regiment. It may be the following person. Sergeant 11153 Henry John LOCKE. 1st Grenadier Guards killed in action 12 March 1915. Born in Cheltenham, enlisted at Gloucester, son of Henry and Adeliade nee Williams of 18 Hanover Street, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire. In 1911 he was with his wife Helen Mary at Normandie, Sandy Lane Charlton Kings, Gloucestershire.

Lance Corporal Henry MARTIN. It may be the following Private 30571 Henry MARTIN 14th Gloucestershire Regiment killed in action in France 22 October 1917. Husband of Laura M. Commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.

Private 355769 William DOPSON. 25th (Montgomeryshire and Welsh Horse Yeomanry) Royal Welsh Fusiliers. Died 30 November 1917 aged 32 . Born in 1884 at Hungerford, husband of Ellen Maud who he married in 1907. In 1911 he was living at 13 Donald Street, Tylorstown, Rhodda, South Wales. Son of Charles and Emily Dopson, Ivy Cottage, Shurdington, Cheltenham, husband of Ellen Maud Dopson, 50 Queen Street, Swindon Road, Cheltenham. Commemorated on the Jerusalem Memorial, Israel and Palestine including Gaza.

Private Albert James ORGAN. 7th Gloucestershire Regiment. Died 19 April 1916 aged 26. Son of Henry James and Esther Ann Organ, Primrose Cottage, Shurdington, Cheltenham. Commemorated on the Basra Memorial, Iraq.

Private 29324 Henry James WOODWARD. 7th Gloucestershire Regiment. Died of wounds 31 March 1917. Commemorated on the Basra Memorial, Iraq.

Of this Parish or closely connected therewith who fell in the GREAT WAR 1914 – 1919.

This tablet is erected by the proud and ever grateful parishioners of Shrudington.

Thus these men died leaving deaths for an example of noble courage unto all their nations
