Rommel's Asparagus - Rommelspargel

This is the kind of Obstacle that would have awaited Allied Troops on all beaches during the Normandy Landings. Each beach impediment came topped with a teller mine, designed to blow the bottom out of any landing boats.

I have also heard of this type of equipment referred to as Hitlers Asparagus.

I visited a website a while back and they were asking about this stuff. Somebody was saying they wanted to find a photo of it but couldnt. Hmmm I cant remember what site it was but If I can remember Im sure they would like this picture.

Also they were driven into open fields along the Normandy coast and were designed to damage gliders landing in the French fields. Ordered in place by Field Marshal Erwin Rommel, the commander of the Atlantic Wall defenses, the logs did extensive damage to the Allied glider forces. In spite of this damage, the gliders were largely successful in landing their troops and equipment.
