GI ingenuity!
During WW2 vast quantities of wooden shipping crates were used by US industry to ship military materiel to wherever it was needed...they varied in size and contained everything from Jeeps and trucks to P-51s etc.
The larger crates which contained disassembled airplanes were often converted into huts out on the fringes of exposed airfields to provide the groundcrews with shelter during periods of inclement weather, especially during European winters.
Here, on a slightly smaller scale, a packing case has been converted into a shelter-cum-observation post, somewhere in the MTO.
Note the pair of M1903 Springfield rifles leaning against it.

US Army engineers practise their demolition skills on the hulk of an obsolete M1917 tank...the US-made version of the French Renault FT17, March 1942.
The men still wear the M1917A1 helmet pending the issue if the new M1 which would so change the appearance of the WW2 GI!
