14-52-35 Ship had sunk. Counted 41 men in water, about 16 of whom were holding on to wreckage. Starboard whaleboat could not be manned account heavy list to starboard after lowering part way... Remained in vicinity until nightfall as I expected a DD or other rescue ship to show up. No such ship appeared and it is believed sinking was not observed on beach. With prevailing weather and strong southwesterly current this locality it is believd that there will be few, if any survivors.
