Who is most likely to develop PTSD?

1. Those who experience greater stressor magnitude and intensity, unpredictability, uncontrollability, sexual (as opposed to nonsexual) victimization, real or perceived responsibility, and betrayal

2. Those with prior vulnerability factors such as genetics, early age of onset and longer-lasting childhood trauma, lack of functional social support, and concurrent stressful life events

3. Those who report greater perceived threat or danger, suffering, upset, terror, and horror or fear

4. Those with a social environment that produces shame, guilt, stigmatization, or self-hatred

Studies have shown that you have 2 situations where you are more likely to develop PTSD.
A sudden and violent breach of your area of comfort while you are unprepared to this event ie terror attack, road accident, sexual assault, horrible crime.

And a rampant continuous stress inducing situation over a long period even if stress level remains low. Typicaly, soldiers in a asymetric war situation when every patrol could (but will not necessiraly) turn into an ambush or firefight.

The PTSD seemes stronger if you cant make sense of the event and if you have 0 control on it. Again, in military situation, that would be because nothing could be done because of RoE. In every day life, passengers have a higher rate of PTSD than drivers in road accidents

I would go along with your train of thought there @Mordoror (Y)

Mordoror sums it up... road accident, being a witness of a horrendous crime, rapes, a failed violent suicide attempt and of course the soldiers deployed abroad who are the first we think of when talking PTSD while maybe forgetting that civilians can be subject to it too.
