I thought I'd start a new thread, eventhough I posted a similar story in the the Military News monster thread. Personally, I feel military news stories should have their own threads if we ever hope to have interesting conversations about them here. When placed into a monster thread, they simply disappear and go unnoticed. Just my 2 cents. If the mods disagree, fold this into another thread. Thanks!

So, this is a fairly serious move. You can't have a NATO member integrating the worlds latest and most advanced fighter, the F-35, with the S-400 system for them to be interoperable. Too many F-35 secrets could be passed on to the Russians. Erdogan is pressing a power play with Trump, which he will lose.

Personally, I have no real idea why Turkey is even a member of NATO.

Turkey's role was to support the eastern flank in a war with the former Soviet Union. But Erdogan has been a very unreliable ally, has illusions of reforming the Ottoman Empire and has been troublesome to his neighbors. The Russians would love to spin Turkey out of NATO and so Erdogan is playing a dangerous game of brinkmanship.

I get the original idea about securing the southern/eastern flank of NATO however, Turkey's political ambitions have always been out of step with NATO/EU, more so since Erdogan took office. He may just find himself without allies and all alone in his ambition of being the leading Islamic nation in the world

Or his own military may end up taking care of him.

Not while he's pouring beuceu dollars into them and the defence industry mate notworthy;

The military has been purged because of the 2016 failed putsch, so nowadays is quite unlikely they will be interested in trying it again, at least for the moment.

Turkey pins hopes on Trump to avoid sanctions over Russia missile deal

ANKARA/WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Turkey’s hopes of avoiding punishing U.S. sanctions over its purchase of a Russian air defense system appear increasingly pinned on intervention from Donald Trump, but the president has little leeway to counter Ankara’s many critics in Washington.

The two NATO allies have argued for months over Turkey’s order for the advanced S-400 missile defense batteries, which Washington says are incompatible with the Western alliance’s defense network and would pose a threat to U.S. F-35 stealth fighter jets which Turkey also plans to buy.

....for the moment....

"Untangling Turkish companies from the F-35 supply chain will take longer, but Undersecretary of Defense Lord said that this would involve “disciplined and graceful wind down” of all of the existing contracts by early 2020. Turkey would find itself blocked from receiving any additional F-35-related contracts. Turkish companies are responsible for the production of various structural components on the jets, as well as portions of the Pratt and Whitney F135 engine that powers them. Turkish firms are solely responsible for making a total of 400 different parts for the F-35, Lord said. This includes electronics company AYESAŞ is the sole provider of the aircraft's panoramic cockpit display.

Turkish President Recep Erdogan recently said it would be impossible for the F-35 program to continue without Turkish participation. "If we can work to our timelines with the Turks, we would have no major disruptions and very few delays," Lord made clear during the press conference.

Turkey has already invested $1.25 billion in the F-35 program and, in return, had expected to receive billions in industrial offsets over the program's lifecycle..."

A few more details.

It seems to me that Erdogan will not retreat either, hopefully this could be additonaly push for improving relations between Turkey and Russia.

Well, that's the game being played by Putin and Erdogan. Putin is happy to be the spoiler on a NATO member, Erdogan is simply being a bit too clever for his own good.

Or his own military may end up taking care of him.

I don’t see it happening.

The 2016 coup or “coup” may have been the last shot Real or half-assed shot at a reboot.

The Turkish military’s long-standing role of rebooting the government has been progressively de-fanged over the last decade with the Sledgehammer Affair.
