Your Sugar Bomb May Get Extra Scrutiny at the Airport: TSA Agents Ask Some Travelers to Remove Snacks from Carry-Ons

You’ve taken off your shoes and removed your laptop from your carry-on bag to go through airport security screening.

You candy bar may be next.

Although it’s okay to board an airplane with food, some Transportation Security Administration agents have been asking travelers to remove their food from carry-on bags at checkpoints before putting them on the conveyor belt. Signs have also appeared at some TSA checkpoints directing people to remove snacks before screening.

It’s apparently a recommendation, however, not a requirement, and part of a new policy that is not really a policy — or at least not a uniform one. Whatever it is, it’s left peckish travelers feeling a little peeved, as USAToday and others have reported. ...more

FBI Seizes Sex Marketplace Website Backpage

Federal agencies, including the FBI, have “seized” controversial classified advertising website Backpage.com, which has been accused of being used in sex trafficking, according to a notice posted overtop the site’s front page Friday. Backpage.com and its “affiliated websites” were seized Friday “as part of an enforcement action” by the FBI with the support of several federal and state agencies, according to the notice.

The notice provides few details for the seizure and the Department of Justice declined to comment on Friday.
Backpage has previously been accused of facilitating sex trafficking and prostitution. Backpage in the past has denied knowingly facilitating sex trafficking, and has insisted it helps authorities track down victims of illegal activity. A representative from Backpage could not be reached for comment on Friday.

The notice on Backpage.com said the Department of Justice would provide additional details about the enforcement action later Friday evening, but a department spokesperson then said in an email that a court had ruled that the case would remain sealed. ...MORE WITH VIDEOS...https://americansecuritytoday.com/fbi-seizes-sex-marketplace-website-backpage-learn-multi-video/

Criminal Illegal Entry Zero-Tolerance & March Enforce Stats

Attorney General Jeff Sessions has notified all U.S. Attorney’s Offices along the Southwest Border of a new “zero-tolerance policy” for offenses under 8 U.S.C. § 1325(a), which prohibits both attempted illegal entry and illegal entry into the United States by an alien.
The implementation of the Attorney General’s zero-tolerance policy comes as the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) reported a 203 percent increase in illegal border crossings from March 2017 to March 2018, and a 37 percent increase from February 2018 to March 2018—the largest month-to-month increase since 2011.

“The situation at our Southwest Border is unacceptaCongress has failed to pass effective legislation that serves the national interest—that closes dangerous loopholes and fully funds a wall along our southern border.”
“As a result, a crisis has erupted at our Southwest Border that necessitates an escalated effort to prosecute those who choose to illegally cross our border,” said Attorney General Jeff Sessions.

AG Sessions Takes Fight on Border Enforce to New Mexico
As thousands of National Guard troops deploy to the Mexico border, U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions brought his tough stance on immigration enforcement to New Mexico on Wednesday, telling border sheriffs that cracking down on illegal crossings and drug smuggling is necessary to build a lawful immigration system.

Sessions ticked off stories about smugglers being caught with opioids and cocaine at the U.S.-Mexico border and legal loopholes that have encouraged more immigrants to make the journey.

“This is not acceptable. It cannot continue,” he said. “No one can defend the way the system is working today.”
Outside the meeting, dozens of immigrant rights activists protested, once again rejecting Sessions’ previous characterization of the border region as “ground zero” in the Trump administration’s fight against cartels and human traffickers.

They chanted in Spanish, saying the region is not a “war zone,” and hoisted signs that protested the proposed border wall and the deployment of National Guard troops to the region. ...MORE with videos

National Guard Will Add Aerial Surveillance At Mexico Border
WASHINGTON — A primary role of the National Guard posted to the Mexico border will be to provide added aerial surveillance, the commissioner of Customs and Border Protection told Congress on Thursday.

Speaking at a hearing of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Homeland Security, Kevin McAleenan said that the Guard can provide assets that are in short supply in his law enforcement agency.

“What the National Guard is going to do is bring significant aviation assets that can close our gap for that surveillance piece at the immediate border,” McAleenan said. “It is supportive but it also tells us what’s crossing so we can interdict.”

The three-hour hearing focused mostly on the budget and assets needed for border security, but a few of the Congressmen did take the opportunity to stress their positions about the use of military forces at the border.

Rep. Nita Lowey of New York, ranking Democrat on the House Appropriations Committee, talked about how Democrats disagree with President Donald Trump’s “politization of border security” and questioned the efficacy of deploying the National Guard.

“The deployment of the National Guard is yet another misguided and impulsive decision the department (Homeland Security) is being forced to justify while other national security priorities are being stretched thin,” Lowey said. “This budget request does not reflect the serious nature of the threats we face.”

On the flip side, Rep. Steven Palazzo, R.-Miss., said that as a member of the Mississippi National Guard and chairman of the National Guard Caucus, he believes the forces could add exponential value. Palazzo said he participated in a joint task force mission on the border in the 1990s doing surveillance and thought he contributed information that helped in border protection.

“I think the National Guard is going to be a huge multiplying force for your agency and securing the border,” he said. “They are great for plug and play. So be creative how you use them.”

FBI New Top Ten Fugitive – Help Catch DEA Agent’s Killer
Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Deputy Director David L. Bowdich, Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Acting Administrator Robert W. Patterson, U.S. Department of State Deputy Assistant Secretary James Walsh, and U.S. Marshals Service (USMS) Acting Associate Director Derrick Driscoll announced the addition of fugitive Rafael Caro-Quintero to the FBI’s list of “Ten Most Wanted Fugitives” on Friday.
Caro-Quintero is wanted for his alleged involvement in the kidnapping and murder of DEA Special Agent Enrique Camarena Salazar (a.k.a “Kiki”) in 1985.

Fugitive Rafael Caro-Quintero marks the 518th addition to the “Ten Most Wanted Fugitives” list.
This is the first time a DEA fugitive has been listed on the FBI Top Ten Most Wanted Fugitives List.
In addition, DEA and the U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of New York announced the unsealing of an additional indictment against Quintero, alleging his role as leader of a continuing criminal enterprise and the individual responsible for the brutal murder of Camarena. ...MORE WITH VIDEOS

TSA Strengthens Carry-On Screening at All US Federal Airports
With the summer travel season fast approaching, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has completed rollout of enhanced screening procedures for carry-on baggage as part of a greater effort to raise the baseline for aviation security.

The stronger security measures, which began last summer, require travelers to place all personal electronics larger than a cell phone in bins for X-ray screening in standard lanes.
In addition to screening personal electronic devices separately, including laptops, tablets, e-readers and handheld game consoles, TSA officers may instruct travelers to separate other items from carry-on bags such as foods, powders, and any materials that can clutter bags and obstruct clear images on the X-ray machine. US Says California Rejects Proposed Border Duties For Troops
SAN DIEGO (AP) — The Trump administration said Monday that California Gov. Jerry Brown rejected terms of the National Guard’s initial deployment to the Mexican border, but a state official said nothing was decided.

“The governor determined that what we asked for is unsupportable, but we will have other iterations,” Ronald Vitiello, U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s acting deputy commissioner, told reporters in Washington.

Brown elicited rare and effusive praise from President Donald Trump last week for pledging 400 troops to the Guard’s third large-scale border mission since 2006.

But the Democratic governor conditioned his commitment on his state’s troops having nothing to do with immigration enforcement, even in a supporting role.

Brown’s announcement last week did not address what specific jobs the California Guard would and would not do, nor answer the thorny question of how state officials would distinguish work related to immigration from other duties.

Vitiello said the governor decided California will not accept terms of an initial troop rollout for the state that was similar to plans for the other three border states, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas ...MORE

Operation No Safe Haven IV Targets Human Rights Violation Suspects

The No Safe Haven Initiative
The United States grants admission to more refugees and asylum seekers annually than any other nation.
Individuals fleeing wars, genocide, ethnic cleansing and various other forms of persecution have often view the United States as a safe haven.

Although Slobodan Mutic stated while obtaining his visa that he had never been arrested, he later admitted that he had been detained on suspicion of killing a married couple, Stjepan and Paula Cindric, in 1992 in the town of Petrinja in central Croatia, which at that time was under Serb control. He was removed in Feb 2018 by ICE.

Upon entry, the vast majority of these people choose to remain here permanently and, ultimately, gain citizenship through the naturalization process.

Good Riddance: Trump Orders The End Of Catch-And-Release
After President Trump announced his plan on Wednesday his plan to deploy National Gaurd troops to the U.S.-Mexico border, it essentially eradicated the ‘catch-and-release’ policy that went rampant during the Obama administration, reports Breitbart.

On Wednesday the Department of Homeland Security and the Defense Department gave the official announcement about moving the troops during a White House Press briefing. They said the move will not give the National Guard the authority to act as temporary agents, but rather it allows troops to take on logistical jobs so that Border Patrol is given more manpower to focus on arresting illegal aliens.

The military operation at the border may shape up to be similar to that of President George W. Bush’s “Operation Jump Start,” where 6,000 National Guard troops were deployed to the southern border.
Bush’s Operation Jump Start ended with National Guardsmen contributing to more than 176,000 illegal aliens being apprehended and about 320,000 pounds of drugs being seized, as Buzz Jacobs mentioned.

Experts tell Breitbart News that the military at the border to assist Border Patrol is only the beginning of a larger operation that can be done by the Trump administration to help reduce the flood of illegal aliens continuing to pour into the U.S.

This week, Trump has complained about a caravan of 1,500 Central Americans who are set to cross the U.S.-Mexico border to request asylum. As Breitbart ...MORE

The CIA has told the lawmakers it was considering releasing further details about Gina Haspel, the current deputy CIA director. But it’s unclear whether that might include information the Democrats are seeking about her 33-year career at the agency, including 32 years undercover.

The senators, all members of the Senate intelligence committee, said a CIA’s letter sent Tuesday in response to their requests was “wholly inadequate.”

“Concealing her background when no sources and methods are at stake shows nothing but contempt for the Senate and the public,” said Sens. Dianne Feinstein of California, Martin Heinrich of New Mexico and Ron Wyden of Oregon.

Many former intelligence officials back Haspel’s nomination and say having a veteran spymaster atop the CIA would be reassuring as the U.S. faces multiple international threats,

Most senators are deciding whether they will vote to confirm her.

NACD Advocate for Rail Reform & Counterterrorism Security Standards
Nearly 90 members of the National Association of Chemical Distributors (NACD) are heading to Capitol Hill to urge Congressional representatives and regulatory officials to support antiterrorism programs that keep our nation secure and to implement reforms that will help countless American businesses who rely on freight rail to remain competitive in today’s business world.

Reauthorizing the Chemical Facility Anti-Terrorism Standards (CFATS) program and implementing meaningful freight rail reform are issues that must not go unaddressed,” said NACD President Eric R. Byer.

“Chemical distributors have a vital and significant impact on the U.S. economy, providing 70,000 high-quality jobs and generating $42 billion in economic output each year.”“It’s essential that Congress hears directly from us about the policy issues impacting our industry.”

FBI Raising Awareness: Sexual Assault on Aircraft
April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month, and the FBI is taking that opportunity to alert the public about a serious federal crime that is on the rise: sexual assault aboard aircraft.
Compared to the tens of millions of U.S. citizens who fly each year, the number of in-flight sexual assault victims is relatively small, “but even one victim is unacceptable,” said FBI Special Agent David Gates, who is based at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) and regularly investigates these cases.

“We are seeing more reports of in-flight sexual assault than ever before,” he said. Sexual assault aboard aircraft—which usually takes the form of unwanted touching—is a felony that can land offenders in prison

Typically, men are the perpetrators, and women and unaccompanied minors are the victims.

“But at LAX,” Gates said, “we have seen every combination of victim and perpetrator.” In fiscal year 2014, 38 cases of in-flight sexual assault were reported to the FBI. In the last fiscal year, that number increased to 63 reported cases. ...MORE WITH VIDEO

Showdown at Border: US Officials say Border Crossing is Full
U.S. immigration officials said Sunday that the San Diego border crossing where hundreds of Central American immigrants intended to apply for asylum was closed due to high capacity — but many of the asylum-seekers were preparing to wait overnight.

Customs and Border Protection (CBP) said earlier Sunday that the agency “reached capacity at the San Ysidro port of entry for CBP officers to be able to bring additional persons traveling without appropriate entry documentation into the port of entry for processing.”

Commissioner Kevin McAleenan told Fox News in a statement that immigrants “may need to wait in Mexico as CBP officers work to process those already within our facilities.”
Despite the announcement, about 50 people walked across a bridge and approached the port facility, but were not immediately accommodated by U.S. officials.

They were being permitted to wait in passageways until room became available, and appeared prepared to wait overnight, according to Irineo Mujica, one of the organizers of Pueblos Sin Fronteras, an organization assisting the asylum speakers.

Another 50 prepared to camp outside a gate on the Mexican side of the border crossing with backpacks and blankets hoping to get their turn on Monday ...MORE WITH VIDEO

FBI Seeks Violent Fugitive in Conn Home Invasion, Offer $10K Reward
The FBI is offering a reward of up to $10,000 for information leading to the arrest of Stefan Alexandru Barabas, who is wanted for his alleged involvement in the home invasion and attempted $8.5 million extortion of a female victim in South Kent, Connecticut.

On April 15, 2007, Barabas and two accomplices who have since been arrested entered into the victim’s residence and hid in a closet until the house staff departed.

Late that night, Barabas and the others emerged with knives and guns, confronted the victim and her friend, and tied them up.

Over the course of the night, Barabas and the others allegedly injected each victim with a supposedly deadly virus and demanded money in exchange for the antidote.

After several hours of trying and failing to obtain the money, the victims were forced to drink a sleeping agent.

Guantanamo Bay Prison to Keep Taking 'Continuing, Significant' Threats to US
The United States will keep sending suspected terrorists caught on the battlefield to its detention facility in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, as long as they pose a "continuing, significant threat" to the country.

Pentagon officials sent the updated guidance to the White House on Wednesday, backing President Donald Trump's decision to reverse course and keep the U.S. military prison open.

"The Secretary of Defense has provided the White House with an updated policy governing the criteria for transfer of individuals to the detention facility at U.S. Naval Station Guantanamo Bay," Defense Department spokeswoman Commander Sarah Higgins said in a statement.

"This policy provides our warfighters guidance on nominating detainees for transfer to Guantanamo detention should that person present a continuing, significant threat to the security of the United States," she said.
While campaigning for president, Trump pledged to keep the facility open, and signed an executive order this past January giving the Defense Department 90 days to update its policy on how to handle terrorists captured on the battlefield.

Announcing the decision during his State of the Union address, Trump said the U.S. needed "all necessary power to detain terrorists" in its fight against Islamic ...MORE

Caravan Migrants Likely to Stay in U.S. for Years Until Asylum Hearings
On April 29, approximately 400 migrants from Central America arrived in Tijuana, Mexico after traveling for weeks in a caravan from Honduras. Their goal was to present themselves to U.S. immigration officials and request asylum in the United States at the San Ysidro port of entry. However, that evening, Border Patrol commissioner Kevin McAleenan released a statement saying that the San Ysidro port of entry had “reached capacity,” and as of Monday morning, none of the caravan members had been processed. Before this was announced, an attorney representing the caravan told ABC News that approximately 150 to 180 people — whom she said were mostly children — would present at the official port of entry and seek asylum that day.

Many Past Caravans, Same Asylum Process
This is not the first time that large numbers of migrants from Mexico or Central America have appeared en masse at a Southwest border port of entry. These gatherings tend to garner considerable media attention, and this latest caravan is no different – especially since President Trump has taken to social media to condemn the people taking part. But despite the attention from the media, the asylum process has not changed.

According to US immigration law, any time a migrant arrived at a port of entry and requests asylum, regardless of their country of origin, they are entitled to a credible fear interview. An immigration officer will ask them questions about why they are leaving their country and why they are afraid of returning. In the case of Mexican and Central American migrants, they are usually fleeing from poverty and extreme criminal violence perpetrated by gangs and drug cartels ...MORE

Did Bin Laden's Death Help The Islamic State?
Seven years after the death of al-Qaeda’s founding leader, Osama bin Laden, the Sunni jihadist movement stands divided. Al-Qaeda remains a powerful player, primarily because of the strength of its affiliates, those groups that have sworn allegiance to al-Qaeda. But al-Qaeda also faces a major rival: its former affiliate in Iraq, the Islamic State.

Their alliance — formed in 2004 — was troubled from the outset. Al-Qaeda was constantly frustrated with its Iraqi affiliate’s excessive violence, prioritization of Shiites as an enemy, infighting with other Sunni militants in Iraq and refusal to heed al-Qaeda’s counsel. Yet their alliance withstood those problems for years. Three years after bin Laden’s death, the relationship not only ruptured, but the Islamic State also challenged al-Qaeda for the leadership of the Sunni jihadist movement.

This raises the question: Would the split have occurred if bin Laden was alive? By some measures, his death had little impact. It didn’t result in al-Qaeda’s disintegration, nor did it end the group’s terrorism. But on the basis of our research into bin Laden’s leadership using the declassified documents from his compound ...MORE

ISIS Inspired Teen Plotted Mass Shooting at Dallas-Area Mall
17-year-old boy in Plano, Texas, has been arrested and charged with plotting a mass shooting inspired by the Islamic State at a shopping mall, law enforcement agencies said on Wednesday.

The FBI and local authorities in Collin County, Texas, said that at the time of his arrest, Azizi-Yarand had sent “more than $1,400 to others” to buy weapons and tactical gear.

In an affidavit, investigators said Azizi-Yarand began communicating online with an FBI “confidential human source” last December about his desire to travel abroad or to conduct an attack in the United States.

He compared himself to other recent “lone wolf” attackers, investigators said.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation and police said high-school student Matin Azizi-Yarand had planned the attack for mid-May and had sought to recruit others for the shooting. Authorities also said he had drafted a “Message to America” justifying his planned attack.

“Look at all the other lone wolves// What training did they have yet they simply killed the kuffar?” Azizi-Yarand told the FBI source, using the Arabic word for “disbelievers,” according to the affidavit ...MORE WITH VIDEO

The Psychology of Defectors: Why Do They Betray Their Nation or Employer?
The defector is a common character in any tale of spy-craft. Whether a defector is a conscientious objector or a traitor, however, is a matter of perspective.

Among the definitions of a defector, there are several common factors. Essentially, a defector is an individual who sells or gives away proprietary information to an adversary – a foreign country or a corporate competitor. Unfortunately, that definition is where the simplicity of defection ends.

All defectors have personal reasons for their betrayal. These reasons complicate our ability to understand defectors to the point where constructing an accurate psychological profile is almost impossible.

To be sure, intelligence services recruit certain individuals to fulfill their needs. But more often than not, a defector chooses to turn traitor for personal reasons. CIA officer Aldrich Ames, for example, became a spy for the Soviet Union because he was under extreme financial pressure. He was eventually caught and is serving a life sentence in a U.S. prison without the possibility of parole.

Why Do Some People Become Defectors?
In his article “The Psychology of Treason,” former CIA psychiatrist Wilhelm Marbes makes the profound statement that “nobody ever defected because he was happy.” We often think that people engage in betrayal for ideological reasons. While betrayal for ideological reasons may be true up to a point, it does little to explain the behavior that precedes defection. ...MORE
