I found these in a photoset relating to people viewing atomic bomb tests in the early to mid 1950s at a Nevada test site. Some military people were moved to within 9km of 'ground zero'! I'm not sure how many tests there were, but it appears there were several.

If you were too cheap to pay the $3, you could still see the cloud from Las Vegas.

American exercises with atomic weapons are a very sore subject for our liberals. In the USSR in 1954, similar exercises were conducted at the Totsk training ground. Our anti-communists talk about the "atrocities" that took place there. At the same time, attaching... photos from American exercises! Yes. In the USSR and even Maoist China, soldiers were given respiratory and skin protection, and American soldiers had to run in this form. As far as I know, the United States holds the record for the number of atomic tests involving the army.

Chinese film. Unfortunately, the Soviet film about the 1954 exercises has only been partially published. The Chinese command was present at the Soviet exercises, and I can assume that in the USSR safety was even stricter.
If any of you are on the VK social network, I can share films about the activities of the Semipalatinsk nuclear test site. There you can see a high level of safety equipment among the personnel.
