First pods SOAR for the Spanish Air Force.
This week, the first flights with SOAR pods were carried out by the MQ-9A Block 5s of the Spanish Air Force's 23rd Wing.
The acquisition of the SOAR pods is part of a package of programmes launched to restore the Spanish Air Force's SigInt/ElInt capabilities, which were diminished following the withdrawal a few years ago of the Queen of the Spectrum (B-707 EW/Elint) the two Falcon 20 EW, and the more recent decommissioning of the entire P-3M Orion fleet.
In addition to this acquisition, other initiatives are underway, such as the CORE pod, still in development for future integration into the Eurofighter, the recent order placed with Indra for a new ESM/ECM/EW pod, and the acquisition in the coming years of new dedicated aerial intelligence platforms (there is talk of three aircraft) for the Santiago Programme, whose development has been entrusted to Indra and Airbus, and which will be apparently based on the A321...
Spain is currently considering expanding its Predator fleet by two to four units as an interim measure in light of the delays and uncertainties surrounding the EuroMale programme.
